Then you'll know what it's like to approach a complex and unfamiliar system where every crumb requires a precise version of every other. If you had my job, you'd find out what you needed to know within half an hour.
 


Rails is in many ways as (more?) backwards-incompatible as Haskell. E.g., Rails 4 requires(!) Ruby 1.9.3+. 1.9.3 was released in the fall of 2011. When new major versions of Rails or Ruby come out, developers are generally expected to make the incremental changes to keep up. It's the "donkey in a well" thing -- you never get buried if you make small changes over time.
