Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately this no longer works, the process is repeatedly killed for using too much memory on "make install". I also had to manually install readline 4 since it's absurdly hard to open an RPM (or at least the compat one they have there).

All up, this is just too hard for the amount of spare time I have at the moment.

I had the same problem with the 6.8.3 install on Dreamhost, "unable to determine current path" or something.
Ended up using 6.8.2 install, and had to crack open the rpm of the old readline version they linked, put it in $HOME/lib, and set $LD_RUN_PATH to point to that.

Not that I break it out for work.
