I wrote the old backend. I have not (and will not) have the time to update to the newer SWF format. Unless things have changed, the format is well documented -- so you don't have to reverse engineer it if you want to make your own attempt. 

That said, if you are trying to generate actionscript bytecode, a better approach may be to use LLVM. That is what adobe does for Alchemy:

if the LLVM -> actionscript code is public, then you can use the existing haskell->llvm bindings and get a bunch of optimizing for 'free'.
