It seems like you need a "bar" that shows you these info.Something like xmobar, dzen, plus a logHook or any graphical pager with EwmhDesktops.
Some pagers shows windows icons at the workspaces, others a "preview" of the layout, etc.
I've heard there's some problem though in setting them to understand xmonad multiple monitors.

I thought that an easy way to address (2) would be to use an OSD (like libnotify) to pop up a notification providing the workspace name/number when the user switches workspaces. Is there a "hook" in xmonad to which I could link a command "run notification saying this is workspace X"?
