There's a splice and a quasiquoter used to add smartBorders to the layout.

This strikes me as somewhat unfortunate, but it's possible that we can't do better given that layouts are rather ugly type-wise currently.  (I have a, possibly several, layout modifiers that are stuck waiting for me to figure out if I can characterize their types properly.)
