Package Documentation (Haddock)
by Bastian Erdnüß 19 Nov '10

Hi, I found the Haddock documentation to the packages that came with the Haskell Platform locally on my machine. 1) It's a little bit uncomfortable to always pick the right one by hand. Is there a more comfortable way like doing e.g. 'haddock Data.List' (that's not working) to direct to the documentation of a certain module? 2) I cannot find the documentation to the packages I post installed with cabal. I tried to build them using e.g. 'cabal haddock Yampa' but that's not working. How do I do it right? Thanks for your help in advance, Bastian

arrow type signature question
by MH 19 Nov '10

19 Nov '10

I am looking at signatures for Arrow and Composable classes and I cannot understand some of them. Could you please explain me the following: Let's take for example the following: class FunAble h => FunDble h where resultFun :: (h b -> h b') -> (h (a->b) -> h (a->b')) class FunAble h where secondFun :: (h b -> h b') -> (h (a,b) -> h (a,b')) -- for 'second' in the signatures: resultFun :: (h b -> h b') -> (h (a->b) -> h (a->b')) secondFun :: (h b -> h b') -> (h (a,b) -> h (a,b')) if (h b -> h b') is the input of these functions where does 'a' comes from in the output? Thanks,

Cost center annotations - where/let difference
by Daniel Seidel 18 Nov '10

Hi, I was doing some heap profiles and ran into the following issue. Consider the program fib.hs: module Main where fib i | i == 0 || i == 1 = 1 | i > 1 = fib (i-1) + fib (i-2) | otherwise = 0 testWhere = {-# SCC "Where" #-} res where res = fib 35 testLet = {-# SCC "Let" #-} let res = fib 35 in res If I choose main = print testLet compile with: ghc --make -prof -auto-all -caf-all -O2 fib.hs and run: ./fib +RTS -hc -hCLet -L60 the fib.hp file will contain entries as expected. If I choose main = print testWhere compile with: ghc --make -prof -auto-all -caf-all -O2 fib.hs and run: ./fib +RTS -hc -hCWhere -L60 the fib.hp file will contain the timestamps, but entries for measured heap consumption. Can anyone please tell me, if this is the expected behavior? I'm not very experienced in benchmarking and was a bit irritated by that difference. Cheers, Daniel.

Random animals
by Amy de Buitléir 18 Nov '10

I have this function: -- | Choose an element at random from a list and return the element and its index -- Ex: runState (randomListSelection ['a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e']) (mkStdGen 1) randomListSelection :: (RandomGen s) => [a] -> State s (Int, a) randomListSelection xs = do i <- State $ randomR (0,length xs - 1) return (i, xs !! i) I want to repeatedly select random elements from a list. I know the code below is totally wrong, but it's the closest I've gotten so far. When I run it in ghci, I get the SAME random element each time, until I reload the module. I guess that's because g is always the same. I'm still struggling with monads, and would appreciate any advice on how to fix this. chooseCreatur = do g <- getStdGen return (evalState (randomListSelection ["cat", "dog", "lion", "mouse"]) g) FWIW, I'll be calling it from a loop within the IO monad. The real list will be growing and shrinking in size.

Heterogeneous Lists

My program needs a list such as [IO 3, IO "f", IO 'z'] :: Show s => [IO s]. Is there any way to achieve this without wrapping all the values in existentially quantified types?

Simple Haskell daemon
by Amy de Buitléir 17 Nov '10

17 Nov '10

I've written a very simple daemon, and it's working just fine. But I'd appreciate it if someone could take a look at it and tell me if any of the code I've written is... stupid. (I'm trying to get more comfortable with this monad stuff.) Thank you in advance. Daemon.hs --------- module Daemon where import System.Exit import System.IO.Unsafe import System.Posix.Signals import Control.Concurrent class DaemonState a where initialise :: IO a work :: a -> IO a finalise :: a -> IO () termReceived = unsafePerformIO (newMVar False) handleTERM :: IO () handleTERM = swapMVar termReceived True >> return () loop :: (DaemonState a) => a -> IO (Maybe a) loop d = do timeToStop <- readMVar termReceived if timeToStop then finalise d >> return Nothing else work d >>= loop start :: (DaemonState a) => IO (Maybe a) start = installHandler sigTERM (Catch handleTERM) Nothing >> initialise >>= loop ----- Here's a simple example of how I use it ----- Main.hs ------- module Main where import Daemon instance DaemonState Int where initialise = do putStrLn "Starting up" return 0 work i = do putStrLn (show i) return (i+1) finalise i = do putStrLn "Shutting down" return () main = start :: IO (Maybe Int)

Re: Apparent bug

I can understand "while(true) { }" producing an endless loop. Can you explain how the code I entered is interpreted to mean an unending cycle? Furthermore most systems can be interrupted, even when in a tight while(true) { } loop. In the example I gave, it seems that GHCi cannot be interrupted. (When I try it on some machines I get an out-of-memory error, but it still(!) can't be interrupted.) I think GHCi is wonderful software. But I doubt that anyone would claim that it's bug-free. I'm surprised that there is so much resistance to acknowledging what appears to be a bug. Why not just fix it? To review, how should this be interpreted? data Test = Test instance Show Test -- The problem occurs even without "where" > Test What interpretation justifies GHCi going into an uninterruptable state at this point? * -- Russ * On Tue, Nov 16, 2010 at 9:00 AM, <beginners-request(a)haskell.org> wrote: > On 16 November 2010 12:17, Thomas Davie <tom.davie(a)gmail.com> wrote: > > > GHCi's job is to run the code you enter. > > > Likewise, in many other languages when you write the following you'll get > an > infinite rule. GHCi bug?
by Russ Abbott 16 Nov '10

This looks like a GHCi bug. Load a file with these two lines into GHCi data Test = Test instance Show Test where -- No body to the instance statement * * Then enter Test at the prompt. * * > Test * * This seems to bomb GHCi. It isn't even interruptible but must be shut down and restarted. * * * -- Russ *
