Using stack inside a function without declaring it as input

Hi I have a function like this : myfunc :: [Char] -> [Char] It is supposed to work pretty much like this : 1. Take a string 2. Put some elements of this input string to output string and put others to stack. 3. Pop elements to that output string too. 4. Do 2 and 3 recursively until stack is empty. 5. Print the output string when stack is empty. I couldn't figure out where to define stack and output string. Can you help me with that? I'm new to Haskell so I can't think in Haskell's logic very well.

Trouble in (Fast)CGI land: matching `CGIT IO a0' with actual type `IO ()'

I am writing a stop-motion capture application using AngularJS and it's going OK. I was inspired to do so after installing "IPCamera" on my phone and Sony tablet. A typical IPCamera session lives on an internal address like this, this example will turn on the LED on the camera: http://192.168.0.5:8080/enabletorch Just because I can (or so I thought), I decided to write a tiny little FastCGI application in Haskell to act as a proxy using the PATH_INFO variable. This means that in to my Javascript code I have this code in a service file: angular.module('stomoServices', ['ngResource']). factory( 'IPCamera', function($resource, urlIPCameraAPI) { return $resource( urlIPCameraAPI, {}, { ledOn: { method: 'GET', params: {featureReq: 'enabletorch' }}, ledOff: { method: 'GET', params: {featureReq: 'disabletorch' }}, focusOn: { method: 'GET', params: {featureReq: 'focus' }}, focusOff: { method: 'GET', params: {featureReq: 'nofocus'}} }); }); and I then issue commands like "IPCamera.ledOn()" etc. All very nice except that it doesn't work yet because I can't get the worlds seemingly simplest CGI application to compile yet! I have read the definitions of CGIResult and CGI and they leave me cold. I am trying to understand monads more but at times like this I once again realise what a complete rank beginner I am! Thanks. Create new value for given type

Hi, I'm given a type 'a' (lets assume the type is infinite) and a set finite 'xs'. Now I want to create a new value of type 'a' that does not occur in 'xs' and return a set 'ys' that consists of 'xs' and also contains the new value. How can I do this??? The types are known at compile time, so I would think it is possible in Haskell.. Greetings, Heinrich

Converting a function to -> Writer w a

I am still a little confused as I shall explain... first of all let's look at the prototype for 'writeInterrupt', writeInterrupt :: DeviceHandle -> EndpointAddress -> WriteAction To me, that reads a "takes a device handle and an endpoint address and returns a WriteAction", and to quote the WriteAction help text verbatim so there is no confusion: type WriteAction = ByteString -> Timeout -> IO (Size, Status)Source Handy type synonym for write transfers. "A WriteAction is a function which takes a ByteString to write and a Timeout. The function returns an IO action which, when exectued(sic), returns the number of bytes that were actually written paired with a Status flag which indicates whether the transfer Completed or TimedOut." Now let's move to my original code and the 'right' code... action <- writeInterrupt handle endPoint let action = writeInterrupt handle endPoint If I understand things correctly up to this point, my mistake was being too eager in using "<-", my mind at that point was obviously confusing the return value from WriteAction with the return type of writeInterrupt and I can see now that what I should have done was use "let" which captures the WriteAction that is returned which can be executed with the payload and the timeout on the next line: (size, status) <- action payload 1000 On this line, the use of "<-" is what is required in order to cause the promised IO action to perform its duties and return me the tuple of data sent and status returned from the USB inner workings. However, we now come to the new type checker error, and this one has me floored right now. Time and time again I find myself beating my head against a wall and tearing my hair out trying to understand the thousand-and-one variations on strings in Haskell! I even tried the "string-conversions" (convertString) package but decided to battle it out instead... I know that "String", the native type is 4-bytes and that ByteString (Strict) and ByteString (Lazy) are both 8-bit, which is great, and I understand that the strict version (at least to me) feels like the rightmatch to be using for data buffers for a USB transfer but why oh why oh why can't I understand why the type checker picked up "internal" somewhere along the way? In the source code for WriteAction we have this: type WriteAction = B.ByteString → Timeout → IO (Size, Status) and at the top of the that source file: -- from bytestring: import qualified Data.ByteString as B ( ByteString, packCStringLen, drop, length ) import qualified Data.ByteString.Internal as BI ( createAndTrim, createAndTrim' ) import qualified Data.ByteString.Unsafe as BU ( unsafeUseAsCStringLen ) So why is it trying to be "internal"! I have tried not to be lazy, I have read everything and looked everywhere before posting again. If it had said: type WriteAction = BI.ByteString → Timeout → IO (Size, Status) I would have understood but it doesn't does it ?! Start here: http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/haskell-src-exts/1.13.5/doc/htm… Use one of the functions listed on that page to parse the file, and then click on the types to take you to pages explaining what you get back. For example, if you use parseFile you can see that you get back a (ParseResult Module). Clicking on ParseResult, you can see that a (ParseResult Module) is either (ParseOk m) where m is a Module, or ParseFailed containing an error message. So you can pattern-match to find out which. Then clicking on Module, you can see all the stuff contained in a value of type Module. Keep clicking on types to learn what they are. The biggest difficulty is that since this is a parser for *all of* Haskell, there will be *lots* of stuff that you don't care about. But it might still be easier than trying to write your own parser; I am not sure. -Brent

Hello list, How to do some C header files parsing and automatic code transformation. like: parse this <sys/time.h> header file, and generate code for this API: int gettimeofday(struct timeval *tv, struct timezone *tz); generated code(automatically call the API, and dump the structure appropriately): void dump_time(void) { struct timeval tv = {0}; struct timezone tz = {0}; gettimeofday(&tv, &tz); printf("tv_sec: %d, tv_usec: %d\n", tv.tv_sec, tv.tv_usec); printf("tz_minuteswest: %d, tz_dsttime: %d\n", tz.tz_minuteswest, tz.tz_dsttime); } because I'm working on a SDK which has hundreds of API to set and get headware states. It'll will be very nice to write some haskell code to parse the header files and generate C code that can dump hardware state automatically. BR Ted

I now have a working USB application that can find, locate and switch LED-s on and off on my Hexwax board, for which I thank all those that helped me out last week. I am now trying to "Haskell-ise" my code i.e. make it less amateurish with respect to some of its inner workings in a constant drive for inner cleanliness and warm fuzziness etc. When attempting to find the device, I use the System.USB.getDevices function which returns me IO (Vector Device), a list of everything that's currently plugged in and available and I then use Data.Vector.filterM like so: *handleFor ctx (cVendor, cProd) = do usbDevs <- getDevices ctx matches <- V.filterM (isTarget (cVendor, cProd)) usbDevs case V.null matches of True -> return Nothing False -> return $ Just $ matches!* *isTarget :: (Word16, Word16) -> Device -> IO Bool isTarget (vid, pid) dev = do getDeviceDesc dev >>= \info -> return $ (deviceVendorId info, deviceProductId info) == (vid, pid) * but... that is not as efficient as it could be because I could have N devices and then I just throw all but the first. Tut tut. Could do better. If I knew how... well I kind of do but I can't figure it out by myself yet! In the Data.Vector there is "Data.Vector.find" which is *exactly* what I want with small dent in the bodywork, the predicate function is pure: *find :: (a -> Bool<http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/base/4.6.0.0/doc/html/Data-Bool…>) -> Vector<http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/vector/0.10.0.1/doc/html/Data-V…>a -> Maybe<http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/base/4.6.0.0/doc/html/Data-Mayb…>a * So my question is, how do I make it work? I know (but don't yet feel comfortable with) about liftM and all that but in this case I can't see how and where it would work. I "know" (like Spiderman knows there is danger) that it's crying out for something and the return type is perfect too as it would just match. SO...how can I do it chaps?
