Hi ! We have a question about about openAL. We would like to know if anybody knows how to read a WAV file by chunks of a determined size, and after doing some processing with a specific chunk send that same chunk back to the sound card so we can play the whole WAV continiously (just like a music player). In people's responses to my serialization questions, I've seen them using $. I didn't know what it was so I've looked it up. Can someone please confirm my understanding of what it does, please? According to http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Haskell/Practical_monads, after the second code sample in the "Return Values" section, it seems to suggest that $ is only used to avoid using so many brackets. Which seems to make sense, but looking at it's definition in Prelude I really can't see why it's useful. Yitz gave me the code; fmap (runGet $ readNames n) $ L.hGetContents h So can I rewrite this without the $ like this? fmap (runGet (readNames n)) (L.hGetContents h) Is there any additional benefit to using $ than just not having to write as many brackets? Hi Tom, There are no additional benifits to the '$' function - you pretty much have it. Wait - one more. It can be used as a 'section' like any other binary operator, so ($ 4) :: (Int -> a) -> a. But that doesn't come up a whole lot. This is much like how (* 5) 6 == 30. For example, once ping has returned it's Maybe [IO String], I would like to be able to create another function such as; purePing :: String -> PortNumber -> Maybe [String] purePing a p = removeIOMonad (ping a p) where removeIOMonad Nothing = Nothing removeIOMonad [] = Just [] removeIOMonad (x:xs) = clevelDropIOMagic x : removeIOMonad xs ...or something... Once the IO [String] has been read from the stream, no further IO is necessary, so any other function should be able to just use the list and not worry about the IO stuff. Again my questions are, Is this an okay thing to do, or is my design/idea very, very wrong? problem with System.Directory.Tree

Hello All, I want to build a program which will recursively scan a directory and build md5sum for all the files. The intent is to do something similar to unison but more specific to my requirements. I am having trouble in the initial part of building the md5sums. I did some digging around and found that "System.Directory.Tree" is a very close match for what I want to do. threadDelay does not delay thread execution?

Hi All, I am looking to make a simple program that polls an interface once a second or so. I thought I could use threadDelay for this, so knocked up the following toy program to test my idea. module TD where import Control.Concurrent import Control.Concurrent.MVar main :: IO () main = do mv <- newEmptyMVar forkIO $ loop mv 0 "Hai" takeMVar mv return () where loop mv n msg = do putStrLn msg threadDelay 10000 if n < 10 then loop mv (n+1) msg else putMVar mv () It doesn't work, in as much as I see all the messages printed seemingly as fast as Std out will print them. What am I doing wrong? All help is much appreciated, Ben
