and if I try with the build rule rather than the make rule (i.e. use Cabal proper rather than GHCMakefile) then I get

which -v3 shows is caused by GHC being passed
..., "-fasm","-v","","Data.Generics","Data.Generics.Aliases", ...
I'm validating a fix right now.
