I would love to drop the derived files (configure and config.h.in) from CVS. (Maybe config.guess, config.sub and install-sh could be dropped too, and fetched from savannah.)

Not so fine: Building should be possible without an Internet connection. Furthermore, those files change rarely and mostly in ways which are not mission-critical. So let's keep them in CVS, which is what all other projects I'm aware of do, too. Cheers, S.
