You probably just need to create a .current-hash file; see /home/simonmar/bin/commit-messages-split.sh for the relevant code.
The strange thing is that I did exactly that. I put the filename of the most recent patch in .current-hash, and yet still somehow it went wrong.
Maybe we should have a script to initialise a repo for the commit messages script?
