Hi all, does anyone know what package should be imported to make GHC accept a declaration like "foreign type dotnet "BigInteger" BigInteger" ? I've searched at Google, GHC and FFI documentation but I haven't found anything. Hi all, does anyone know about any existing extensions to FFI or even to GHC which incorporate access to overloaded methods, which are common in OO environments (.NET, Java), without using "renaming techniques" ? help on win32
by James Mitchell 20 Apr '05

20 Apr '05

Hey y'all, (I haven't seen any traffic on this list--I hope it's ok to ask help questions here.) I'm writing an interface to Berkeley DB, and, while I can link to my wrapper library fine from C, I can't seem to do it successfully from GHC. My first attempt was: D:\src\dm>ghc -fffi test.hs db.lib libdb43.lib compilation IS NOT required Warning: .drectve `/DEFAULTLIB:"libcp" /DEFAULTLIB:"LIBC" /DEFAULTLIB:"OLDNAMES" /EXPORT:_db_info_status_pos,DATA /EXPOR T:_db_info_struct_size,DATA /EXPORT:_db_open@4 /EXPORT:_db_close@4 /EXPORT:_db_read@4 /EXPORT:_db_write@4 /EXPORT:_db_re move@4 /EXPORT:_db_info_mode_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_out_data_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_in_data_length_pos,DATA /EXPOR T:_db_info_pathname_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_error_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_in_data_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_key_leng th_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_key_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_out_data_length_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_db_name_pos,DATA ' unrecognized db.lib(Release/berk_db.obj)(.text+0xd):berk_db.cpp: undefined reference to `??2@YAPAXI@Z' db.lib(Release/berk_db.obj)(.text+0xc):berk_db.cpp: undefined reference to `_except_list' db.lib(Release/berk_db.obj)(.text+0x14):berk_db.cpp: undefined reference to `_except_list' db.lib(Release/berk_db.obj)(.text+0x5d):berk_db.cpp: undefined reference to `??_V@YAXPAX@Z' db.lib(Release/berk_db.obj)(.text+0x7e):berk_db.cpp: undefined reference to `_except_list' db.lib(Release/berk_db.obj)(.text+0x6c):berk_db.cpp: undefined reference to `??_V@YAXPAX@Z' db.lib(Release/berk_db.obj)(.text+0x78):berk_db.cpp: undefined reference to `??_U@YAPAXI@Z' ... where db.lib is my wrapper library. Taking a hint from the compiler defaultlib directives, I then did the following: D:\src\dm>ghc -fffi test.hs db.lib libdb43.lib libc.lib libcp.lib oldnames.lib compilation IS NOT required libc.lib(build/intel/st_obj/crt0.obj)(.text+0x0): In function `mainCRTStartup': f:\vs70builds\9466: multiple definition of `mainCRTStartup' D:/GHC/GHC-6.2.2/gcc-lib/crt2.o(.text+0x240):crt1.c: first defined here Warning: .drectve `/DEFAULTLIB:"libcp" /DEFAULTLIB:"LIBC" /DEFAULTLIB:"OLDNAMES" /EXPORT:_db_info_status_pos,DATA /EXPOR T:_db_info_struct_size,DATA /EXPORT:_db_open@4 /EXPORT:_db_close@4 /EXPORT:_db_read@4 /EXPORT:_db_write@4 /EXPORT:_db_re move@4 /EXPORT:_db_info_mode_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_out_data_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_in_data_length_pos,DATA /EXPOR T:_db_info_pathname_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_error_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_in_data_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_key_leng th_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_key_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_out_data_length_pos,DATA /EXPORT:_db_info_db_name_pos,DATA ' unrecognized Warning: .drectve `/merge:.CRT=.data /defaultlib:kernel32.lib /disallowlib:libcd.lib /disallowlib:libcmt.lib /disallowli b:libcmtd.lib /disallowlib:msvcrt.lib /disallowlib:msvcrtd.lib ' unrecognized Warning: .drectve `/MERGE:.rtc=.rdata ' unrecognized I assume that the warnings are no problem, but I can't figure out how to get rid of the duplicate "mainCRTStartup" symbol. This's really vexing me, as there are a number of things such as gdb support that would go a long way towards making Haskell more useable for general purpose applications (instead of the "hard" calculations at which it excels), but I just can't seem to make it work. thanks in advance, James |-----------------------------------------------| | James Mitchell | http://www.jimdesu.us | |-----------------------------------------------| |When the shoe fits, the foot is forgotten; when| |the belt fits, the belly is forgotten; when the| |heart is right, "for" and "against" are | |forgotten. -- Chuang Tzu | |-----------------------------------------------| __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? H/Direct build on Windows (with mingw, by preference...)
by Paul Moore 18 Apr '05

18 Apr '05

Hi, I apologise if this is a FAQ - I have searched various places, but not found anything. I'd be more than happy to be pointed at a document I've missed. I have GHC 6.4 installed on my Windows XP Pro PC, and the mingw free compiler suite. I've downloaded H/Direct 0.21, and tried to follow the instructions in the file INSTALL, but they don't work for me. First of all, I tried the install using the standard Windows CMD. It looks like the makefiles expect a Unix-type shell, as they fail due to the lack of a "case" command: >mingw32-make boot "------------------------------------------------------------------------" "===fptools== Recursively making \`boot' in src ..." "PWD = C:\Data\hdirect-0.21" "------------------------------------------------------------------------" 'case' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. mingw32-make: *** [boot] Error 1 I then tried using the mingw "MSys" environment, which does give a POSIX shell (bash). This failed because (I think) I am lacking "happy": $ mingw32-make boot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ===fptools== Recursively making `boot' in src ... PWD = c:\Data\hdirect-0.21 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==fptools== c:/apps/mingw/bin/mingw32-make.exe boot ; in c:\Data\hdirect-0.21/src ------------------------------------------------------------------------ rm -f Version.hs echo "--Automatically generated" > Version.hs echo "module Version where" >> Version.hs echo "" >> Version.hs echo "pkg_name :: String" >> Version.hs echo "pkg_name = \"HaskellDirect (ihc.exe)\"" >> Version.hs echo "pkg_version :: String" >> Version.hs echo "pkg_version = \"snapshot 170405\"" >> Version.hs ../../happy/src/happy -g -g +RTS -H6m -RTS Parser.y process_begin: CreateProcess((null), ../../happy/src/happy -g -g +RTS -H6m -RTS Parser.y, ...) failed. make (e=2): The system cannot find the file specified. c:\apps\mingw\bin\mingw32-make.exe[1]: *** [Parser.hs] Error 2 c:\apps\mingw\bin\mingw32-make.exe: *** [boot] Error 1 OK, I got happy, and got going again. But it appears that something weird happens with the NativeInfo file. I don't know much about compiling Haskell (I'm pretty new at this, as must be apparent :-)) but from some investigation, it looks like NativeInfo is included as a built in module in GHC 6.4, so the H/Direct build is clashing with it. But if I try to exclude the provided NativeInfo, the built in one is not being found properly. So I'm stuck. Ultimately, I'd just like H/Direct binaries for Windows. I'm willing to build them, but I'd like to not have to hack sources or makefiles, download further packages, and generally debug the build process for myself :-( A quick check of CVS shows no recent changes to any thing that looks relevant, so I suspect that "use CVS" isn't going to be the answer either... As I say, I'm fairly new at this. I want to learn Haskell, but to make it more "relevant" to me, I was hoping to do some simple stuff using the Windows API and/or COM - so H/Direct looked like exactly what I need. Thanks for any help, Paul. -- The only reason some people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory -- Paul Fix

No, if you do, it will complain, "can't find '-lLibName'". I don't know why, since it's a port of the same program.... > Google finds a number of binding to Berkely DB. Have > you tried those? I found the MissingH binding, which looks ok, but doesn't expose what I want to use; for instance it's I/O is string-only, and doesn't have cursor support. Besides, while I'm not a great Haskell hacker, I'm pretty ok in C++, and figure I can contribute to the community via making bindings available, and will probably think of other things I also want to integrate to, so I really want to learn the FFI. |-----------------------------------------------| | James Mitchell | http://www.jimdesu.us | |-----------------------------------------------| |When the shoe fits, the foot is forgotten; when| |the belt fits, the belly is forgotten; when the| |heart is right, "for" and "against" are | |forgotten. -- Chuang Tzu | |-----------------------------------------------| __________________________________ Yahoo! Strict arguments with foreign import
by Andre Pang 16 Mar '05

16 Mar '05

Hi all, I'm just wondering -- for "primitive" C types (int, float, char, etc), why was the decision made in the FFI to have function declarations look like e.g. foreign import ccall "math.h sin" sin :: CDouble -> CDouble rather than foreign import ccall "math.h sin" sin :: !CDouble -> !CDouble I'm fairly sure any foreign imported functions must be strict in their arguments, and it would make things a bit clearer for Haskell programmer. Am I missing something (non-)obvious in my reasoning? -- % Andre Pang : trust.in.love.to.save <http://www.algorithm.com.au/>
