
Oh, good question. It was Ubuntu 12.04 LTS so I just assumed it would be

Let me know if there's a better way, or if you'd like to help get this kind of thing into an even more accessible form (Amazon AMI, Chef recipe, etc).
I do this occasionally with an Amazon VM. Incidentally, why did you download the GHC 7.6.3 tarball rather than apt-get install ghc? The current GHC on Ubuntu is 7.4 which is enough to bootstrap GHC HEAD.
