Improving the contributing to ghc experience

Friends, as you all have seen over the last few days, making the contributing to ghc experience easier for those who have not yet contributed to ghc, is a topic of interest to many of us. I’d like to thank Edward Z. Yang for seizing the opportunity to convince us to test drive the ghc-proposal process for this as well. Hence I went ahead and created the proposal with the help of others! So far it’s basically a small collection of what was mentioned on the mailing list. The hope is that facilitating the discussion though the ghc-proposal process would produce a coherent set of proposed changes and help making this a reality. I henceforth invite you to add your comments, critique and suggestions to the proposal that can be found at https://github.com/ghc-proposals/ghc-proposals/pull/9 Cheers, Moritz

Thanks for Moritz, You describe quite a lot there and I do wonder whether it might be helpful to break apart some of these ideas. Nevertheless, I've added some review comments. Thanks again for taking the time to collect these ideas. Cheers, - Ben

That might very well be. Maybe this proposal outgrows itself and needs to be split into multiple proposals down the line? I’d suggest to facilitate the initial feedback in the current one to get a better grip on what we are up against :)

Of course, I think the current approach is certainly better than nothing. It's quite valuable to even have a consolidated list of potential improvements. Cheers, - Ben

Friends,
Hi Moritz, I have fixed a few minor stylistic issues that I noticed in my read-through on this branch [1]. I would have liked to open a pull request against your branch, but sadly GitHub is strangely not cooperating (is the ghc-megacorp/ghc-proposals not a fork of ghc-proposals/ghc-proposals? GitHub seems to think not). Anyways, you might consider merging these when you go to revise your proposal. That being said, I wouldn't merge until there has been more of an opportunity for discussion as I suspect pushing a new revision may invalidate some of the comments that have been left in review. Cheers, - Ben [1] https://github.com/bgamari/ghc-proposals/tree/improved-ghc-development
