Anyway, I support the Simons' positions as chairs, and I'd be happy to
either stay on the committee or step down, as you guys decide.

I don't think it's silly at all: it reifies the notion that no one is a committee member for life. Right now, I don't imagine there is contention, but having a process such as we do is good hygiene in preparing for a potential future where there is contention.
