Proposed solution: Recompile on a recent Debian stable (Wheezy). This situation sounds exactly like [https://ghc.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/7344 this bug] reported 17 months ago. Symptoms are 'pandoc --version' hangs and consumes memory until the process eventually dies with an OOM error. The same error occurs when the type synonym is replaced with a type family (which is the case I was originally interested in) or a type constructor like `Data.Proxy`, as long as it's poly-kinded it seems.
