It is invalid because of tabs inserted into the template that cause the functions to have syntax / indenting errors. I attempted to install happy to patch it, but happy will not compile either because of the tabs. I think clang's CPP is inserting tabs into lines with > 8 spaces of indentation. Proposed solution: Recompile on a recent Debian stable (Wheezy). This situation sounds exactly like [https://ghc.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/7344 this bug] reported 17 months ago. Symptoms are 'pandoc --version' hangs and consumes memory until the process eventually dies with an OOM error. The same error occurs when the type synonym is replaced with a type family (which is the case I was originally interested in) or a type constructor like `Data.Proxy`, as long as it's poly-kinded it seems. Now I got it on master branch and Luite reported the same problem on #ghc (log above is actually his).
