This is a small example, reduced from the `scaleFloat` method for doubles: {{{ module Float(fun) where import GHC.Float (Double(..)) import GHC.Integer (decodeDoubleInteger, encodeDoubleInteger) fun :: Double -> Double fun x | isFix = x | otherwise = case x of (D# x#) -> case decodeDoubleInteger x# of (# i, j #) -> D# (encodeDoubleInteger i j) where isFix = isDoubleFinite x == 0 foreign import ccall unsafe "isDoubleFinite" isDoubleFinite :: Double -> Int }}} Here, `fun` does current not get the CPR property, and the work gets type `GHC.Prim.Double# -> GHC.Types.Double`. Why? Because in core, there will be a {{{ case {__pkg_ccall main isDoubleFinite GHC.Prim.Double# -> GHC.Prim.State# GHC.Prim.RealWorld -> (# GHC.Prim.State# GHC.Prim.RealWorld, GHC.Prim.Int# #)}_dQD ds_dQA GHC.Prim.realWorld# of _ [Occ=Dead, Dmd=<L,A>] { (# ds_dQC [Dmd=<L,A>, OS=OneShot], ds_dQB [Dmd=<S,1*U>] #) -> ... }}} where the case body has `DmdType m {dQz-><L,1*U(U)> dQA-><L,U>}`, but `dmdAnalAlt` detects that this is evaluating a possibly exiting function and throws aways the information using `alt_ty `lubDmdType` topDmdType`. Would it be ok to `lub` only the demand on the free variables, but keep the CPR information? However, it seems that the report for the roles of the `TaggedT` type has too many parameters. It is defined in tagged-transformer [https://hackage.haskell.org/package/tagged-transformer-0.8/docs/Data- Functor-Trans-Tagged.html] as `newtype TaggedT s m b = TagT { untagT :: m b }`, but is listed with 5 roles. I did try to move the definition of `TaggedT/Tagged` into my module so I didn't have to import the library, but when I did the error didn't show up: TaggedT was listed with the expected roles `phantom representational nominal`. This works fine for GHC, but not GHCi, and therefore also not Template Haskell code. Minimal example attached. Try it in an environment where libz is not in a standard location, e.g. inside a nix-shell. Note that if you remove the template Haskell splice in Main.hs, the code compiles just fine. This affects GHC 7.10.2, but also HEAD from 2015-08-28, even one including Tamar Christina's 5d841108acef950fed6a5e608ac9b18e7431aa87 commit cherry- picked. I haven't been able to test more recent HEAD, because of unrelated compilation issues. I surmise that a fix to #10458, which currently blocks using HaskellR in GHCi, would also fix this, but I'm not sure. Reason: * Each `Id` in the interface file records (among other things) the '''arity''' of the `Id`, and whether it has '''CAF references''' * We really only know these two things for sure after `CorePrep`. The conversion from Core to STG makes no structural changes. * However the result of `TidyPgm` (which preceded `CorePrep`) is used to generate the interface file. So it has to predict the arity and CAF-ref status of each `Id`. * This is not good. It restricts what `CorePrep` can do (notably, it must not change the arity of a top-level `Id`), and it leads to unsavoury code (e.g. look at the call to `CorePrep.cvtLitInteger` in `TidyPgm.cafRefsL`. It's also dangerous: an inconsistency could lead to a crash. This is a long-standing problem. My current thought for how to unravel it is this: * `TidyPgm` does not attach arity or CAF-ref info. * Instead, run `CorePrep` after `TidyPgm`, and generate accurate arity and CAF-ref info * Then use that auxiliary mapping during the conversion from tidied program to `ModIface`. I don't think this would be hard. It would mean that the tidied program and the core-prep'd program would have to exist in memory at the same time. An alternative would be to generate the `ModIface` from the tidied program ''sans'' arity and CAF-ref info, and then, after `CorePrep` run over it to add arity and CAF-ref info. (You'd have to do this before generating the fingerprints.) The advantage of this is that the `ModIface` can be a lot smaller than the code for the entire module. #9221: (super!) linear slowdown of parallel builds on 40 core machine -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Reporter: | Owner: carter | Status: new Type: bug | Milestone: Priority: high | Version: 7.8.2 Component: | Operating System: Unknown/Multiple Compiler | Type of failure: Compile-time performance bug Keywords: | Test Case: Architecture: | Blocking: Unknown/Multiple | Difficulty: | Unknown | Blocked By: | Related Tickets: | -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- im seeing slowdowns in parallel builds of a (simple!!) 6 module project when I build it on a 40 core server i'm using for work. for any given ghc invocation with -jn, once n>10, i start to see a super linear slow down as a function of n heres some basic numbers at -j1 0m2.693s at -j4 0m2.507s at -j10 0m2.763s at -j25 0m12.634s at -j30 : 0m39.154s at -j40 : 0m57.511s at -j60 : 2m21.821s these timings are another 2-4x worse if ghc is invoked indirectly via cabal-install / setup.hs according to the linux utility latencytop, 100% of ghc's cpu time was spent on user-space lock contention when I did the -j40 invocation. the timing in the -j40 case stayed the same even when ghc was also passed -O0 (and -fforce-recomp to ensure it did the same ) a bit of experimentation makes me believe that in *ANY* cabalized project on a 40 core machine will exhibit this perf issue. cabal clean ; cabal configure --ghc-options="-j" ; cabal build -j1 should be enough to trigger the lock contention. That being said, it can be quite useful and is worth putting effort into bringing back up to grade. There are a few things that need to be done here, 1. Collect a list of the existing counters 2. Work out what they are supposed to be measuring 3. Decide which still have a chance of being useful and accurate 4. ??? 5.
