Austin has pointed out to me that this sort of change carries with it substantial risk. Given that we want to ensure that 7.10.3 is stable, I think it is reasonable to be a bit conservative here. I'm going to close this for now as 296bc70b5ff6c853f2782e9ec5aa47a52110345e has been merged.
