Somebody at the Haskell eXchange mentioned it could have something to do with the recent [https://nixos.org/nixpkgs/manual/#sec-hardening-in-nixpkgs hardening changes in NixOS-16.09]. It turned out that the `bindnow` feature was causing the problem.
