I think for efficiency reasons unboxed sums should really not make things CAFFY
I rather agree. But the same is true for `patError` etc, not just `absentError`. I've opened a new ticket #15113. So if that was fixed, again this patch (or part of it) becomes a patch we'd want to revert. But perhaps not all of it?
