It boils down to this: I don't know what the invariant should be and don't know how to arrive at the solution. I also don't think there's much to be gained from changing it at this point. Any extra src ticks won't be used right away and not having ticks on all the primitive strings probably also doesn't affect the final output. My personal bias here would be to not throw away information.
