 I tried using just `forkIO` and `MVar`, but it does not exhibit the
 problem:

     let test = mk'speed_test_cb (return ()) >>= speed_test

     m <- newEmptyMVar
     _ <- forkIO $ test >> putMVar m ()
     takeMVar m
 }}}
