 What about `-iquote` instead of `-I`?  According to the manual `-iquote`
 only affects `#include "..."` but not `#include <...>`.

 Alternatively, one could also try something like
 {{{
 cd $original_dir
 gcc -x c - <$temp_input
 }}}
 It seems GCC always uses the current working directory when stdin is used
 as input.
