So the plan would be to experiment with a specializer that works also for non-recursive functions.
That idea is pursued in #14844. But I'd still like to be be sure that this is truly the reason for the regression. We have comment:27 which shows a regession for `x2n1` (is it the only regression?). Then comment:28 says "maybe it's this". But we have no concrete evidence for what the `x2n1` regression really is.
