That's bizarre. I just compiled your program on my laptop (Gentoo Linux, gcc 3.2) and linking took 6-7 seconds. John, what version of gcc/binutils is on your RedHat box? I haven't been able to discern any pattern among those experiencing long link times so far, except that -export-dynamic flag used by the dynamic loader stuff seems to cause the linker to go off into space for a while. ghc -M

Folks, after using ghc --make happily in a project for a while I am switching to using Makefiles since I have a number of Main programs in the same directory that share a lot of modules. Now, since ghc -M does such a great job at gobbling up the dependencies, I wonder if it was not possible to extend its functionality a little bit so that it also determines the .o files that are required to link a Main program. I could imagine something like an -optdep-Main and then the program name. -Peter

MacOS X (10.2.2) standalone ghc app

I'm trying to deliver a self contained app that I developed with ghc 5.04.1 on Mac OS X (10.2.2). It all works well if ghc is installed on the machine, but on a user-machine w/o ghc, the following file is needed: HaskellSupport.framework/Versions/A/HaskellSupport The error message is: idc_Darwin can't open library: HaskellSupport.framework/Versions/A/HaskellSupport (No such file or directory, errno = 2) Trace/BPT trap Could someone explain why this is needed on OSX? It seems OS specific, for I don't have any of these issues on Windows and Linux. Any hint about how to do the linking statically on OSX would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, - Reto

Proposal for GHC documentation

Hi, GHC team The current GHC documentation is written using SGML with DocBook DTD and DSSL stylesheet. I tried to translate GHC users guide from SGML to XML and now I have XML-ised user guide with just few syntactic changes. The rewritten documentation can be translated to HTML using just a standard xsltproc tool (available for both Cygwin & Linux) and XSLT DocBook stylesheet. The main advantage of XML version is that there is already developed XSLT stylesheet which generates input for Microsoft HTML Help Compiler. The GTK development team was already developed stylesheet for DevHelp. Advantages of HTML Help browser and DevHelp are that both supports useful search engine. Haddock also has already developed HTML Help output and can be easy extended to generate .devhelp index file. I think that this will made GHC documentation much more easy for reading and browsing. --show-iface bug?

some notes noticed when upgrading to 5.04.2 --show-iface seems to not be able to show .hi files created when profiling is turned on. error recieved: mismatched interface file versions: expected 5042, found 5042p also, -hb seems to segfault immediatly but other types of heap profiling seem to work. this is on redhat 7.3 and the RPMs from the ghc site. I dont seem to be getting 'heapCensus' errors anymore which is good. Hello. I was able to install rpm with --nodeps. Everything is fine. Sorry for this newbie topic. Btw, .msi installer fails under WinXP if drive C: doesn't exists.
