Happy 1.11 binaries for OpenBSD i386

Hi, I've finished a binary package and a port of Happy-1.11 to OpenBSD i386. The binary package (296k) can be ftp'd from: ftp://ftp.cse.unsw.edu.au/pub/users/dons/happy/happy-1.11.tgz This can be installed with the command (as root): pkg_add happy-1.11.tgz You can remove the package with: pkg_delete happy-1.11 If you want to see how the package was built, or just like building from source, an OpenBSD ports system "port" is also available: ftp://ftp.cse.unsw.edu.au/pub/users/dons/happy/happy-1.11-port.tgz Making sure you have a reasonably recent OpenBSD ports tree on the system, and a recent version of GHC installed, download the port to a convenient place and: tar xvzf happy-1.11-port.tgz cd happy then, as root: make && make install You can uninstall this with pkg_delete, as above. Note that you will need gmake to do the build. GHC 5.02.3 binaries for OpenBSD i386

I'm pleased make available GHC 5.02.3 binaries for OpenBSD i386. Also available is a ports tree 'port' if you want to build from source. The binary package (15M) is available from: ftp://ftp.cse.unsw.edu.au/pub/users/dons/ghc/ghc-5.02.3.tgz And can be installed with (as root): pkg_add ghc-5.02.3 It can be removed with (as root): pkg_delete ghc-5.02.3 If you like building from source the ports tree 'port' that built the binary package is available from: ftp://ftp.cse.unsw.edu.au/pub/users/dons/ghc/ghc-5.02.3-port.tgz To build the port you first need a GHC binary on the system. The 5.02.3 binary package can be used, or you could build 4.08.2 from .hc source and use that. There is a port to do this at the above URL. You will also need the Happy parser, which you can get from: ftp://ftp.cse.unsw.edu.au/pub/users/dons/happy/happy-1.11.tgz Once you have a GHC and Happy, untar the port and as root: make && make fake At this point the compiler is built, but you must remove the old GHC before you can install the new one. So: pkg_delete ghc-4.08.2 # or whatever version of GHC you used make install This takes around 170 minutes on my P3 700. Once again, any bug reports or suggestions would be welcome. We've wondered about this from time to time, but it's not clear to me that it's an all-round good idea. The proposal, therefore, is to extend the meaning of '-prof' to mean '-prof -osuf p_o -hisuf p_hi' or similar. To summarise the advantages/disadvantages: - win: you could store profiled and normal objects in the same directory. - win: you'd be less likely to mix up profiled and normal objects. - lose: Makefile writing gets harder. Extra suffix rules have to be added to deal with the new suffixes, and 'make depend' has to add dependency rules for the extra suffixes (ghc -M has some support for doing this). problems with FFI including h files

Hi all! I'm hoping someone with more FFI experience than me (pretty much anyone who's done anything with FFI) can help me out. Basically, I'm trying to include an h file and gcc is telling me that there are parse errors in it. However, when I write a c program that includes that h file, it don't get such errors. Thanks a lot for the solution! And of course the ghci behaviour is much more sensible than the hugs one. And for pointing me to the mail archive. It encourages me to submit my next problem: stack overflow with simple Show instances...more later I wonder if there is a list of Hugs to GHCI "gotchas"? instance Show (Ptr a)

The GHC docs claim Ptr a is an instance of Eq, Ord and Show, but it doesn't actually seem to have a Show instance. At least the docs should reflect the fact that there is not instance; preferably, could someone actually make an instance? Hello Haskellers, I've just joined this email group because I am teaching Haskell to our 2nd year students. I'm not a Haskell expert but I do enjoy functional programming. I don't know if anyone can help with this; I've checked the FAQs and the bug-reports on SourceForge and found nothing but I'd have thought it might be a common problem for folks migrating from hugs to ghci. I'm used to using hugs in haskell 98 mode but it seems that functions need not be monomorphic in where clauses in that case (is this a departure from the standard?). However, in ghc-5.02.3 for Haskell 98 (without glasgow extensions) it seems that is not the case. I _guessed_ that I need to use the flag -fno-monomorphism-restriction but I don't know whether I've failed to turn it on or if the problem is to be found somewhere else. A related problem I've found is that if I try to specify that flag in a pragma, I get an error message stating that static flags may not be specified in pragmas, and yet the flag is supposed to be dynamic. Here is a simple instance of a program that runs under Hugs but not ghc(i)-5.02.3 : module Test where class Bounded a => Testit a where test1 :: a data Test a = Test {f1::[a], f2::[Char]} class Super a where sup1 :: a -> Maybe a instance (Eq a, Testit a) => Super (Test a) where sup1 (Test{f1=x, f2=y}) = Just Test{f1=x, f2=y} where y' = top y x' = top x top :: [a] -> a top (s:st) = s is it possible to compile this program in ghc-5.02.3? instance Ord FiniteMap

Is there any particular reason FiniteMap (and hence Set) aren't instances of Ord?
