I'm afraid I can't see a way to generalise the types of block and unblock, since they are based on underlying primitives that really do have type (IO a -> IO a). You might try using the hack I added to MBlock.h for x86_64. It's admittedly completely bogus, but it hasn't failed for me yet. On a pleasant note, the GCC folks have promised to fix the register variable problems with GCC 3.x for the 3.4 release, so we should be able to use GCC 3.4 on non-x86 platforms. Cheers, Simon

I made a first attempt using cross-compiling from a Linux/i386 box. If you use hc-build, then you don't need to copy across the .hi files: they're built later, and similarly for the package.conf file. In light of this, I might amend the instructions to recommend using hc-build even for an unregisterised bootstrap, because copying across the .hi files isn't guaranteed to work when cross-compiling (I'm not certain that the .hi format is platform-independent enough). I think the stg_ap_v_ret panic might be due to using the wrong AutoApply.hc, or some other mixup between registerised and unregisterised code. When I went through this bootstrap process recently I cross-compiled from a 32-bit machine to a 64-bit machine - in theory this should be the most difficult kind of port, but it went through surprisingly smoothly. Ok, so it was the same OS at both ends which might have made things easier. I recently went through the unregisterised bootstrap process myself (for amd64), and I've written some detailed instructions in the Building Guide - you might want to take a look and see if you have anything to add. For unregisterised bootstrapping, I don't recommend using hc-build. The resaon is that hc-build goes to some lengths to make a tree which is safe to 'make install' in, and this isn't necessary for bootstrapping - all you need to do is get to the "working compiler" stage, and then use this to build a completely fresh tree. I've applied your patches, with some small tweaks by myself to avoid breaking the unregisterised bootstrap, which is normally done with a compiler without interpreter support, hence the lack of the readline, haskell-src and other libraries.
