GADT question

Hello, I've been attempting to use GADTs to create a small domain specific language, and I'm running into an odd problem. Adding one case to the example at the beginning of the Wobbly types paper: data Term :: * -> * where Lit :: a -> Term a Inc :: Term Int -> Term Int IsZ :: Num a => Term a -> Term Bool Div :: Fractional a => Term a -> Term a -> Term a If :: Term Bool -> Term a -> Term a -> Term a and extending the eval function accordingly: eval :: Term a -> a eval (Lit i) = i eval (Inc t) = eval t + 1 eval (IsZ t) = eval t == 0 eval (Div t u) = eval t / eval u eval (If cond cons alt) = if eval cond then eval cons else eval alt I get an error "No instance for (Fractional a) arising from the use of '/'" This seems odd to me, since Div is constrained to have fractional arguments. Is there something obvious I'm missing? Thanks, /g

Map.lookupInsertWithDefault ?

I am going to use the function lookupInsertWithDefault :: Ord a => Map.Map a b -> a -> b -> (Map.Map a b, b) lookupInsertWithDefault tab a b' = case Map.lookup a tab of Just b -> (tab, b ) _ -> (Map.insert a b' tab, b') Its intention is as in the example: lookupInsertWithDefault ftable n (factor n) -> (ftable', factorization) (1) I hope that it will search in the table before trying to compute (factor n) by new. Also it stores each new value for future. (2) I wonder in what relation this may be to existing libraries (something like findWithDefault + insert) and whether the Map library may need such. Hi all, I'm having trouble building ghc under mac os x 10.3.9. Hello, I'm attempting to use GADTs for the first time, and I'm running into an (I think) odd error. My file includes: data DFExpr :: * -> * where Deriv :: (Num t) => t -> Deriv Int (DFExpr t) (DFExpr t) (:+:) :: (Num t) => DFExpr t -> DFExpr t -> DFExpr t -- and so forth, DFFeat :: FExpr t and I'm getting an error "Not in scope: type constructor or class `Deriv'. I've got -fglasgow-exts in the options - what else should I be doing? /g

My wild guess of what is causing the lexer error: as C compilers, GHC seems to read # 12345 "foo" as meaning "pretend that this is line 12345 in file foo". This is commonly used by automatic code generators (e.g. yacc) to force the compiler to emit error messages pointing to the human-written source (the file passed to yacc) and not to the generated code. This happens only if the # is the first character of the line. People, I need help on making for profiling, and cannot decide whether the question is on GHC or on Cabal. I have ghc-6.4.1, and Cabal-1.1.3-September-12 installed in my user directory, under Debian Linux, and need to make a project for profiling. ghci -package Cabal says ... Loading package base-1.0 ... linking ... done. ... Loading package Cabal-1.1.3 ... linking ... done. I start with a contrived example project of M1.hs, M2.hs, Main.hs: --------------------------------------- module M1 where m1 = True module M2 where import M1; m2 = m1 && m1 Main.hs: import M2l; main = putStr $ shows m2 "\n" --------------------------------------- For this, ghc --make -prof -auto-all Main works as needed -- without packages. Now, try to make a package for profiling: foo.cabal: name: foo version: 1.0 build-depends: base, haskell98, data exposed-modules: M2 other-modules: M1 ghc-options: -prof -auto-all -hisuf p_hi -osuf p_o The aim is to build foo (of M2) as a library, then to make Main under the package foo, and with profiling.
