Adding (some) libraries to a GHC tree

Hi Neil, You can manually add any package which is listed in http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/DarcsRepositories by getting it (with darcs), directly into the /libraries subdirectory. When you later use darcs-all, the added library will be included when pulling new changes etc. I have added a wiki page to explain this: http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/AddingLibsToBuild (feel free to remove it and add the material to a more convenient place) HTH Jost

making Happy-1.17

Dear team of Happy, Please, where to find the `make' instruction for Happy-1.17 ? How to `make' it from source on Linux, i386 ? I have ghc-6.8.3 installed, and Cabal. As I see happy.cabal, maybe, Happy can be `made' similarly as I make (with Cabal and GHC) my programs under GHC (?). So, I command cd ~/happy/happy-1.17/ runhaskell Setup.lhs configure -v --ghc --prefix=/home/mechvel/happy/happy-1.17/inst It reports Configuring happy-1.17... making 6.9.. with 6.8.3

Dear GHC team, I again have problems with making GHC from source. Now, this is for making ghc-6.9.20080910-src.tar.bz with ghc-6.8.3. ./configure --prefix=... reports that Happy is needed. But earlier, I compiled ghc-6.8.3 with itself, and it did not required Happy. Generally, as I recall, I got used to making GHC from source without installing Happy. Please, what (and why) has changed about this? Maybe ghc-6.8.3 has Happy inside it and ghc-6.9.20080910-src has not? Here are the fragments of config.log for ghc-6.8.3 auto-make: --------------------------------------- ... But it occurs difficult to find out how to do this. This is not like with GHC. The source GHC has README in the root of the `make' directory, where it is visible an short instruction ./configure ... make make install And in Happy, I do not find such. I am unhappy with Happy. GADT problems

Hi The following code works in GHC 6.8.3, works in GHC 6.9.20071111, but doesn't work in GHC HEAD. {-# LANGUAGE GADTs, ScopedTypeVariables #-} module Test where data E x = E x data Foo where Foo :: Gadt a -> Foo data Gadt a where GadtValue :: Gadt (E a) f (Foo GadtValue) = True f _ = False Under GHC HEAD I get the error: GADT pattern match with non-rigid result type `t' Solution: add a type signature In the definition of `f': f (Foo GadtValue) = True Adding a type signature to f fixes this problem: f :: Foo -> Bool But I haven't found anywhere other than the top level f to add a type signature. When the match is in a list comprehension, it becomes much harder. While playing further I discovered this example: foos = undefined g = [() | Foo GadtValue <- foos] This code doesn't compile under GHC HEAD, but does under 6.8.3. However, adding the type signature: g :: [()] Makes the code compile. This is surprising, as [()] isn't a GADT type, so shouldn't need stating explicitly. Any help on what these errors mean, or how they can be fixed with local type annotations? Building GHC with time package

Hi, I want to build GHC HEAD with the time package. I figured out how to do it by editing packages and removing the word extralibs, but that doesn't seem to be the correct way. I suspected I might be able to get time included by giving some incantation to ./darcs-all, but I couldn't figure out what - commands such as help and --help to darcs all were little use. What is the correct way to add a library into the GHC build? If someone tells me I'll add it to the wiki somewhere. SignalFun t' a). The full type of my switch operator is SSignal t (forall t'. SignalFun t' a) -> SignalFun t a. Some of the trivial functions, I mentioned above, have rank 2 types, some have impredicative types. The latter ones typically have types of the form f (forall t. signal t a) -> f (forall t. signal' t a') where f is some specific functor. And as far as I understood, FPH brings advantages for both rank n and impredicativity. Am I wrong at this point? Best wishes, Wolfgang

How to directly strip ghc generated binaries

Sometimes it's annoying to call strip --strip-all <program name> everytime after compilation. Windows build failure

Hi, I've just tried building GHC HEAD using GHC 6.8.3 on Windows following the instructions on the wiki (http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/Building/Windows) I initially got a failure about cc1 not being found when executing 6.8.3's gcc, which I worked around by adding c:/ghc/ghc-6.8.3/gcc-lib at the end of the path (i.e. last priority) After this error I get a problem with include files, see the attached log file. It looks like include files are going wrong between Mingw and 6.8.3. How to print output and ask input on the same line

This is my main function: main = do putStr "What's the value that each equation must satisfy? " c <- readLn putStr "How many unknowns are there? " n <- readLn sequence_ (result c n) Using runhugs / winhugs / ghci, I can see every output of putStr before it stops for readLn. But compiling it with ghc, it just stops for readLn and putStr output is printed together with sequence_' one. So, instead of: What's the value that each equation must satisfy? <stop for readLn> How many unknowns are there? <stop for readLn> <output of sequence_> I got: <stop for readLn> <stop for readLn> What's the value that each equation must satisfy?
