Friends The page describes an improved implementation of the Typeable class, making use of polymorphic kinds. read-Int implementation

Who can tell, please, how read string :: Integer is implemented in ghc-7.4.1 ? Is it linked from the GMP (Gnu Multi-Precision) library? It is suspiciosely fast :-) In my test on 10^5 strings of length l = 5, 20 it shows the cost order in l less than 1, as if it was O(log(l)), or O(squareRoot(l). This is even despite that the very forming of the string list by concat and by take l0Exp (strs l) seems to have large overhead. The impression is that I am missing something. Kind error in GHC-7.4.1, works in GHC-7.2.2

Hello, I have some code that compiled fine in GHC-7.2.2 but fails in GHC-7.4.1 with a kind error. {-# LANGUAGE MagicHash, NoImplicitPrelude, PackageImports #-} import "base" Data.Function ( ($) ) import "base" GHC.Exts ( Int(I#) ) import "base" Prelude ( Integral, fromIntegral, toInteger ) import "integer-gmp" GHC.Integer.Logarithms ( integerLogBase# ) intLog :: (Integral a) => a -> a intLog x = fromIntegral $ I# $ integerLogBase# 10 (toInteger x) This results in the following error: Couldn't match kind `#' against `*' In the second argument of `($)', namely `I# $ integerLogBase# 10 (toInteger x)' In the expression: fromIntegral $ I# $ integerLogBase# 10 (toInteger x) In an equation for `intLog': intLog x = fromIntegral $ I# $ integerLogBase# 10 (toInteger x) Simply eliminating some $'s using parenthesis solves the problem: intLog x = fromIntegral $ I# (integerLogBase# 10 (toInteger x)) Why do I get the above kind error? Could it be a bug in GHC?

Taking binary from hackage or GHC?

Dear interested parties :-), GHC 7.4.1 started to ship and expose the binary library, version 0.5.0.3. On hackage is binary-0.5.1.0. In Debian, we try to provide one version of each library, so we have to decide: * Use the version provided by GHC and drop the independent binary package (as we have done with random, for example). * Do not expose binary in GHC and continue using the version from hackage. @Upstream: Do you think binary on hackage will diverge much from the one in GHC and would you expect your users to want the new versions before they are shipped with GHC? And do you expect breakage in any components (e.g. haddock) if everything but GHC uses a newer binary package? Dear Laurent, I’m one of the Debian maintainers of the main Haskell compiler GHC. GHC itself has little resources to maintain GHC on exotic architectures, but Debian tries hard to provide a Haskell ecosystem on these. It would help a lot if there were GHC buildbots on these architectures, and I would like to volunteer to manage these, but I’m still looking for suitable hardware. Note that GHC is a big beast, it takes 29h and requires 4GB free disk space and preferably something around 6GB of RAM to build on a arm box.I think you need to take that into account when deciding upon this request. I’d already be happy if I can do a test run every week or so. GHC is BSD licensed (http://www.haskell.org/ghc/license) my contributions are mostly Debian package maintenance and a few minor patches.
