mysteriously hidden ghc-binary-0.5.0.2

Trying to build ghc-6.12.0.20091121, from an hc bootstrap build of ghc-6.12.0.20091010 -- i.e., first self hosted build of ghc. I'm hung up at the point where, after building ghc-cabal, ghc-pkg, hsc2hs etc., it tries to generate dependencies (?) for a Binary.hs in libraries/bin-package-db. It can't find module 'Data.Binary' - "It is a member of the hidden package `ghc-binary-0.5.0.2'." OK, I am not familiar with packages, except insofar as encountered while trying to build GHC, but from "ghc-pkg list", I would not get the impression that ghc-binary-0.5.0.2 is hidden (no parentheses.) I get this result with either ghc-pkg, from the 20091010 build where ghc-stage2 is, or the newly built 20091121 version. The command line seems to correctly have -hide-all-packages, followed eventually by -package ghc-binary-0.5.0.2. The command and results below. Is this a configuration problem with 6.12.0, or is it more likely that my ghc build is defective? Thanks! Build of HEAD fails in integer-gmp

I get this error message, which suggests that the gmp-wrappers file should be compiled with -fPIC but isn't being: /usr/bin/ld: libraries/integer-gmp/dist-install/build/cbits/gmp-wrappers.dyn_o: relocation R_X86_64_PC32 against undefined symbol `__gmpz_init' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC

Build ghc with hardened toolchain

Hello. I am using Gentoo with hardened features enabled. Recently i want to try yi-editor. I built GHC with emerge and nothing strange happened. conservative optimizations

Dear GHC team, I have observed a space leak in a simple program compiled with -O option. The problem is to compute the "Fibonacci rabbit sequence": [1,0,1,1,0,1,0,1,1,0,1,1,0,...] see e.g., this Haskell Cafe discussion: http://www.haskell.org/pipermail/haskell-cafe/2007-November/034236.html I like this problem because I studied the spectrum of the Schrodinger operator defined by this sequence a while ago. Anyway, here are two slightly different programs that compute the rabbit sequence: -- Version 1: O(n) time, O(n) space rs :: [Int] rs = 1: tail [x | r <- rs, x <- f r] where f 0 = [1] f 1 = [1,0] main :: IO () main = print $ take 100 rs -- Version 2: O(n) time, O(log n) space rs :: () -> [Int] rs () = 1: tail [x | r <- rs(), x <- f r] where f 0 = [1] f 1 = [1,0] -- test of memory usage main :: IO () main = print $ rs() !! (10^8) When the second program is compiled with -O flag (using GHC-6.10.4 or the latest version, 6.13.20091125), it eats up a lot of memory. After some web searching and experimentation, I found that the space leak can be fixed by compiling with -fno-full-laziness and inserting {-# NOINLINE rs #-} However, I still have a few of questions: 1) Why would inlining introduce a space leak? This looks like a compiler bug to me. 2) Is there a set of "safe" or, if this is a better word, "conservative" optimizations that never increase the running time or space usage more than by a constant factor? This leads to another question: relative to what? I understand that prescribing the exact evaluation order and other details would be impractical, but is it possible to define *some* aspects of the program behavior that would allow the programmer to guarantee the correct asymptotic efficiency? -package-name flag in 6.10.x

The ghc documentation at http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/users_guide/packages.html says the following: > -package-name foo > Tells GHC the the module being compiled forms part of package foo. If this flag is omitted (a very common case) then the default package main is assumed. > Note: the argument to -package-name should be the full package identifier for the package, that is it should include the version number. For example: -package mypkg-1.2. I observe that the example uses -package rather than -package-name, and wonder if this is a mistake. Moreover, when I attempt to use the flag, like so: $ ghc -package-name hat-2.06 ... <command line>: cannot parse 'hat-2.06' as a package identifier This used to work with ghc-6.6.x and ghc-6.8.x, but seems to have stopped working with ghc-6.10.x. I surmise that the leading zero after the version point separator is to blame? It seems an unfortunate regression. Regards, Malcolm

Hi all, We are pleased to announce the second release candidate for GHC 6.12.1: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/dist/6.12.1-rc2/ As well as the source tarball: ghc-6.12.0.20091121-src.tar.bz2 there are installers for Windows (i386) and OS X (i386), and binary distributions for x86_64/Linux and i386/Linux. For the Linux binary distributions, the "linux-n" tarballs are recommended over the "linux" tarballs. Please test as much as possible; bugs are much cheaper if we find them before the release! :set -fbreak-on-exception in GHCi causes exception in readFile

Perhaps I don't quite get how this works, but when I :set -fbreak-on-exception in GHCi, I get an exception using readFile. It reads the entire file and then throws what appears to be an EOF exception. Prelude> readFile "blah.txt" > "blah\nblah\nblah\nStopped at <exception thrown> > _exception :: > e = GHC.Exception.SomeException (GHC.Exception.:DException _ > > (GHC.Show.:DShow ...) ....) > (GHC.IOBase.IOError Nothing > GHC.IOBase.EOF ....) > When I :set -fno-break-on-exception, I see no exception. I thought that lazy IO reads until it reaches the EOF, then closes the file. This happens with both 6.10.1 and 6.8.3, so perhaps this is standard stuff, and I'm missing something. Regards, Sean
