Hi, Is the instructions/notes for the OSX pkgs that were prepared Wolfgang Thaller available anywhere? I would like to make the OSX binaries more install friendly, like the pkg for 6.4.1 Thanks, Mac -- Omnem crede diem tibi diluxisse supremum.

foldl laziness support
by Serge D. Mechveliani 15 Oct '06

15 Oct '06

Dear Haskell implementors, I keep on facing a frightening problem of the laziness support. Consider the example of ----------------------------------- import List (union) main = let n = 10^4 :: Int in putStr (shows (take 2 $ unionMany [[1 .. i] | i <- [1 .. n]]) "\n") unionMany = foldl union [] ----------------------------------- Compiling it in ghc-6.6, -O, we have the running cost O(n), instead of O(1). Now, changing to unionMany [] = [] unionMany (xs: xss) = union xs (unionMany xss) , we reach O(1). For example, for n = 10^9, the time remains less than 0.01 sec. My program has many fragments of such kind, when a function produces a long list, some client functions need all the list, and others need only its small initial part. When we rely on the standard library, foldl creeps in everywhere. Also may things are easy to program via foldl. I wonder how to avoid these numerous cost pitfalls. Maybe, the complier could do more optimization? Regards, ----------------- Serge Mechveliani mechvel(a)botik.ru

Re: darcs patch: initial, very incomplete tags generator (and 16 more)

Hello nr, Saturday, October 14, 2006, 12:30:54 AM, you wrote: > The ultimate goal is to replace hasktags with > a tags generator based on GHC-as-a-library. is this working at this time? how i can download/use it? hasktags is over-simplified utility, having a really parsing alternative to it will be great -- Best regards, Bulat mailto:Bulat.Ziganshin@gmail.com

ghc 6.6 for Windows crashes my program on exit
by Brian Hulley 15 Oct '06

15 Oct '06

Hi, Has anyone else come across this crash with ghc 6.6 on Windows? The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0x5c8) has exited with code 0 (0x0). First-chance exception at 0x7c90eb74 in main.exe: 0xC0000008: An invalid HANDLE was specified. Unhandled exception at 0x7c90eb74 in main.exe: 0xC0000008: An invalid HANDLE was specified. The program has this form: main = do display_graphics_window_and_run_message_loop -- window has now been closed putStrLn "Finished\n" getChar and has been working perfectly with ghc 6.4.2. The only changes I had to make to compile it with ghc 6.6 were minor tweaks to deal with the changes to the ByteString api. When I run the ghc 6.6 compiled version, the window is displayed and works as usual, then when I dismiss the window, "Finished" is written to the console. It is only when I press return in the console that the program crashes on exit with that error message. I'm running the program from within MS Visual Studio (the graphics window is written as a C DLL that's called from Haskell). If I just run the program directly from the desktop the program exits silently . If I run the program from a command shell nothing unusual happens either: no error is printed out but the crash-on-exit is presumably still happening. >From just looking at the error message, it looks to me like it might be that the rts exit code has somehow held onto the handle of the window's thread after this thread no longer exists, but of course this is only a wild guess. Alternatively, which file(s) in the ghc source distro would be the place to start looking to see what happens between the time the thread for the window has exited and the thread for main.exe exits? Thanks, Brian. -- Logic empowers us and Love gives us purpose. ghc-6.6 candidate Win32 installer
by Sigbjorn Finne 14 Oct '06

14 Oct '06

Hi, for Win32 users wanting the latest GHC goodness, a candidate 6.6 installer is now available, http://haskell.org/ghc/dist/6.6/ghc-6-6.msi If anyone's willing to download it and kick the tires a bit, that'd be great. If nothing too egregious shows up, I'm planning to publish sometime tomorrow. thx --sigbjorn

making docs for ghc6.6
by Michael Shulman 14 Oct '06

14 Oct '06

When I do `make html' in ghc6.6, haddock complains about an unrecognized option `source-modules'. It appears this option was added in the most recent haddock 0.8; perhaps ghc6.6 should check the version of haddock installed? I went ahead and installed haddock 0.8, and now the documentation gets made, but `make install-docs' only installs the library documentation, not the users guide. Am I doing something wrong? Mike

ghc-6.6 under solaris
by Christian Maeder 13 Oct '06

13 Oct '06

I've created ghc-6.6 under solaris. This did only work with SplitObj=No in mk/build.mk. (There was an early split error, that I could reproduce.) When trying out this compiler, I got the following error (that I only post for the record): Cheers Christian [410 of 642] Compiling Proofs.HideTheoremShift ( Proofs/HideTheoremShift.hs, Proofs/HideTheoremShift.o ) ghc-6.6: panic! (the 'impossible' happened) (GHC version 6.6 for sparc-sun-solaris2): lookupDeprec main:GUI.ConsoleUtils.listBox{v r36Wf} Please report this as a GHC bug: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/reportabug gmake: *** [hets] Error 1

searching docs in 6.6
by Serge D. Mechveliani 12 Oct '06

12 Oct '06

Please, who knows how to find (install) docs in ghc-6.6 ? I install ghc-6.6 from source to ~/ghc/6.6/ghc-6.6/inst by ./configure --prefix=/home/mechvel/ghc/6.6/inst make make install The installed system seems to work. Then, I apply the WWW brouser to see the documentation. It shows at ~/ghc/6.6/ghc-6.6/docs/ the files index.html, users_guide/ and such, but I cannot see the docs further because of that " ~/ghc/6.6/ghc-6.6/docs/users_guide/index.html cannot be found ". How to install it, please? Thank you in advance for help, ----------------- Serge Mechveliani mechvel(a)botik.ru

Problem with ghc-6.5.20061008 on Mac OS X Intel
by Deborah Goldsmith 12 Oct '06

12 Oct '06

Hi, I was able to build this release using the 20060915 Intel build that's available, on 10.4.8. ghci seems to work OK (except for Readline), but an attempt to compile gives: $ ghc example25.hs /usr/bin/ld: Undefined symbols: _mtlzm1zi0_ControlziMonadziState_evalStateT_closure _mtlzm1zi0_ControlziMonadziState_gets_closure _mtlzm1zi0_ControlziMonadziState_zdf1_closure _mtlzm1zi0_ControlziMonadziState_zdf7_closure _mtlzm1zi0_ControlziMonadziState_zdf9_closure _mtlzm1zi0_ControlziMonadziWriter_zdf5_closure _mtlzm1zi0_ControlziMonadziWriter_zdf7_closure collect2: ld returned 1 exit status This didn't happen before. Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong, or is there something wrong with the 20061008 snapshot? Thanks, Deborah
