GHC 6.4.2 release candidates

Hi Folks, We're finally in release-candidate mode for 6.4.2. Please grab a snapshot and try it out: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/dist/stable/dist/ (scroll to the bottom for the latest). The available builds are: x86_64-unknown-linux (Fedora Core 5), i386-unknown-linux (glibc 2.3 era), and Windows (i386-unknown-mingw32). There's a source snapshot if you want to build yourself - please try this if you can, we need to make sure the source bundle builds cleanly. Barring any serious hiccups, the release should be out in a couple of weeks. Cheers, Simon

Hello GHC, i has the following function: freezeIOUArray :: (Unboxed e, HasDefaultValue e, Ix i) => IOUArray i e -> IO (UArray i e) when i try to use rule: {-# RULES "freeze/IOUArray" freeze = freezeIOUArray #-} the compiler barks. i found the way that compiled: {-# RULES "freeze/IOUArray" forall (x :: (forall s e i . (Unboxed e, HasDefaultValue e) => IOUArray i e)) . freeze x = freezeIOUArray x #-} but is this rule really works? Google Summer of Code 2006

Hello, Haskell.org is going to partecipate as mentoring organization to the Google Summer of Code programme of this year. We have formed a group of volunteers taking care of the administrative work as well as the mentoring part. The group is listed here: <http://haskell.org/haskellwiki/Summer_of_Code:_People>. We are now looking for projects, and mentors. We've reached number 24 but we are happily going to add more, Haskell Open Source paid work for the summer! If you run some active open source program you might want to mentor some student who will be working on your code, for example. Either just add your ideas here: <http://haskell.org/haskellwiki/Summer_of_Code:_Project_suggestions> (as well as your informations on the People's page) or contact me for details. I am also looking for students, I'd like to ear from them if they are going to partecipate with Haskell projects, last year I was alone! Linking error in GHC 6.4.2 snapshot of 21 April (mingw).

When I downloaded and unpacked the latest GHC snapshot of the STABLE branch for Windows (ghc-6.4.2.20060421-i386-unknown-mingw32.tar.gz), I got the following error trying to start GHCi: ___ ___ ___ _ / _ \ /\ /\/ __(_) / /_\// /_/ / / | | GHC Interactive, version 6.4.2, for Haskell 98. / /_\\/ __ / /___| | http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ \____/\/ /_/\____/|_| Type :? for help. Loading package base-1.0 ... linking ... : c:/ghc/GHC-64~1.2/HSbase1.o: unknown symbol `_sqrtf' : unable to load package `base-1.0' ___ The complaint about _sqrtf also shows up when I try to compile/link anything with ghc; so the problem is bigger than just not being able to use GHCi. The GHC is installed in c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2, the PATH begins with c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2;c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2\bin;c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2\gcc-lib; LIBRARY_PATH is set to c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2\gcc-lib I know for sure that the 6.4.2 snapshot of a couple of weeks ago worked fine, so I wonder what might be wrong with the latest one. GHC6.5 + TH + Profiling

Hello I am having problems combining TH and profiling with ghc-6.5.20060420. GHC seems to die when loading the object file for TH execution and failing to notice that it should load profiling symbols. The exact error is: Loading package base-1.0 ... linking ... done. Loading package template-haskell-1.0 ... linking ... done. Loading package mtl-1.0 ... linking ... done. Loading package stm-1.0 ... linking ... done. ghc-6.5.20060420: .haskell_cache/http_searchpath.org-default.map.cache//HAppS/Util/StdMain/StartStateTH.o: unknown symbol `entering_PAP' I can create a simpler example of this if needed. - Einar Karttunen

Visual Haskell

Hello! First of all I want to thank all the people, who developed Visual Haskell. It's a big step towards functional programming in real life. I have an application in C# in Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Haskell, which seems to work only in Visual Studio 2003 (both Visual Studios are installed on my computer). Now, is it possible to write parts of the C# application in Visual Haskell? If yes, is there any downloadable tutorial about how one can use Visual Haskell in collaboration with other Microsoft languages? TIA Dmitri Pissarenko

I think there may be a few unexpected failures on Windows, but I've checked them and they're not fatal. I'll probably update nofib and make a bundle of that too. Building ghc stages

I've tried building ghc with make all; make install But when compiling one of my programs I get GHC stage restriction: `view' is used in a top-level splice, and must be imported, not defined locally What did I do wrong? Marc

'while' loop on mutable arrays causes stack overflow

Hello, a friend and I were recently experimenting with mutable arrays. We tried to implement a simple dot product on STUArrays using a 'while' loop. Unfortunately, every implementation we produced caused a stack overflow. Switching to other implementations of 'while' or to IOUArrays did not help us. We were using ghc-6.4.1 on Linux x86, with gcc 3.3.6.
