"A Language Based Approach to Unifying Events and Threads"
by Geoffrey Alan Washburn 28 Apr '06

I don't see that anyone has mentioned yet, but I expect a number of GHC users and developers will find this paper very interesting: http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~stevez/papers/LZ06a.pdf

Error when ($) is used, but no error without
by Robin Bate Boerop 27 Apr '06

27 Apr '06

This code compiles properly (with -fglasgow-exts on GHC 6.4.1): class CC a type C x = CC a => a x f, g :: C a -> Int f _ = 3 g x = f x But, this code: class CC a type C x = CC a => a x f, g :: C a -> Int f _ = 3 g x = f $ x -- the only change gives this error: Inferred type is less polymorphic than expected Quantified type variable `a' escapes Expected type: a a1 -> b Inferred type: C a1 -> Int In the first argument of `($)', namely `f' In the definition of `g': g x = f $ x What's going on here? -- Robin Bate Boerop

The 2006 GHC Hackathon
by Simon Marlow 26 Apr '06

26 Apr '06

Dearest GHC hackers, We're considering the possibility of organising a GHC Hackathon around ICFP this year. This wiki page has tentative details, and you can indicate whether you'd be interested in coming, and give us your suggestions: http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/Hackathon Cheers, Simon

Haskell.org and Google Summer of Code 2006
by Paolo Martini 26 Apr '06

26 Apr '06

Hello, It is now official. Haskell.org is a mentoring organization for this year's Summer of Code programme. You can see it listed on the official site <http://code.google.com/soc/> clicking on `Haskell.org (ideas)' you'll be directed to the trac site we are setting up. (It's 4 AM and I've just finished adding the projects, and cleaning things up a bit.) I am _very_ happy about seeing this project working out for real. I fear that I wouldn't be able to reach everybody even mailing all the important mailing list; I hope many students will be able to take advantage of this great occasion. Help me spread the word, tell everybody about the project :-) You can find the new site here <http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/summer-of-code/>, the StartPage will be updated with details during the program. Projects ideas and volunteers for mentoring are still very much welcome! students' application period starts on May 1. Thanks very much for the support, hope to hear thoughts and proposals, Paolo. --

GHC 6.4.2 release candidates
by Simon Marlow 25 Apr '06

25 Apr '06

Hi Folks, We're finally in release-candidate mode for 6.4.2. Please grab a snapshot and try it out: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/dist/stable/dist/ (scroll to the bottom for the latest). The available builds are: x86_64-unknown-linux (Fedora Core 5), i386-unknown-linux (glibc 2.3 era), and Windows (i386-unknown-mingw32). There's a source snapshot if you want to build yourself - please try this if you can, we need to make sure the source bundle builds cleanly. Barring any serious hiccups, the release should be out in a couple of weeks. Cheers, Simon

RULES
by Bulat Ziganshin 24 Apr '06

24 Apr '06

Hello GHC, i has the following function: freezeIOUArray :: (Unboxed e, HasDefaultValue e, Ix i) => IOUArray i e -> IO (UArray i e) when i try to use rule: {-# RULES "freeze/IOUArray" freeze = freezeIOUArray #-} the compiler barks. i found the way that compiled: {-# RULES "freeze/IOUArray" forall (x :: (forall s e i . (Unboxed e, HasDefaultValue e) => IOUArray i e)) . freeze x = freezeIOUArray x #-} but is this rule really works? SPJ once mentioned that type checking is just impossible in current rules usage implementation -- Best regards, Bulat mailto:Bulat.Ziganshin@gmail.com

Google Summer of Code 2006
by Paolo Martini 24 Apr '06

24 Apr '06

Hello, Haskell.org is going to partecipate as mentoring organization to the Google Summer of Code programme of this year. We have formed a group of volunteers taking care of the administrative work as well as the mentoring part. The group is listed here: <http://haskell.org/haskellwiki/Summer_of_Code:_People>. We are now looking for projects, and mentors. We've reached number 24 but we are happily going to add more, Haskell Open Source paid work for the summer! If you run some active open source program you might want to mentor some student who will be working on your code, for example. Either just add your ideas here: <http://haskell.org/haskellwiki/Summer_of_Code:_Project_suggestions> (as well as your informations on the People's page) or contact me for details. I am also looking for students, I'd like to ear from them if they are going to partecipate with Haskell projects, last year I was alone! (I did write the bindings to the Cairo vector graphics library and integrated them in Gtk2Hs.) Details about the programme itself can be found on the official webpage: http://code.google.com/summerofcode.html Hoping you like the idea as much as me, Paolo. --

Linking error in GHC 6.4.2 snapshot of 21 April (mingw).
by Cyril Schmidt 24 Apr '06

24 Apr '06

When I downloaded and unpacked the latest GHC snapshot of the STABLE branch for Windows (ghc-6.4.2.20060421-i386-unknown-mingw32.tar.gz), I got the following error trying to start GHCi: ___ ___ ___ _ / _ \ /\ /\/ __(_) / /_\// /_/ / / | | GHC Interactive, version 6.4.2, for Haskell 98. / /_\\/ __ / /___| | http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ \____/\/ /_/\____/|_| Type :? for help. Loading package base-1.0 ... linking ... : c:/ghc/GHC-64~1.2/HSbase1.o: unknown symbol `_sqrtf' : unable to load package `base-1.0' ___ The complaint about _sqrtf also shows up when I try to compile/link anything with ghc; so the problem is bigger than just not being able to use GHCi. The GHC is installed in c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2, the PATH begins with c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2;c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2\bin;c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2\gcc-lib; LIBRARY_PATH is set to c:\ghc\ghc-6.4.2\gcc-lib I know for sure that the 6.4.2 snapshot of a couple of weeks ago worked fine, so I wonder what might be wrong with the latest one. I would appreciate any hints. Cheers, Cyril

GHC6.5 + TH + Profiling
by Einar Karttunen 24 Apr '06

24 Apr '06

Hello I am having problems combining TH and profiling with ghc-6.5.20060420. GHC seems to die when loading the object file for TH execution and failing to notice that it should load profiling symbols. The exact error is: Loading package base-1.0 ... linking ... done. Loading package template-haskell-1.0 ... linking ... done. Loading package mtl-1.0 ... linking ... done. Loading package stm-1.0 ... linking ... done. ghc-6.5.20060420: .haskell_cache/http_searchpath.org-default.map.cache//HAppS/Util/StdMain/StartStateTH.o: unknown symbol `entering_PAP' I can create a simpler example of this if needed. - Einar Karttunen
