My wild guess of what is causing the lexer error: as C compilers, GHC seems to read # 12345 "foo" as meaning "pretend that this is line 12345 in file foo". This is commonly used by automatic code generators (e.g. yacc) to force the compiler to emit error messages pointing to the human-written source (the file passed to yacc) and not to the generated code. This happens only if the # is the first character of the line. People, I need help on making for profiling, and cannot decide whether the question is on GHC or on Cabal. I have ghc-6.4.1, and Cabal-1.1.3-September-12 installed in my user directory, under Debian Linux, and need to make a project for profiling. ghci -package Cabal says ... Loading package base-1.0 ... linking ... done. ... Loading package Cabal-1.1.3 ... linking ... done. I start with a contrived example project of M1.hs, M2.hs, Main.hs: --------------------------------------- module M1 where m1 = True module M2 where import M1; m2 = m1 && m1 Main.hs: import M2l; main = putStr $ shows m2 "\n" --------------------------------------- For this, ghc --make -prof -auto-all Main works as needed -- without packages. Now, try to make a package for profiling: foo.cabal: name: foo version: 1.0 build-depends: base, haskell98, data exposed-modules: M2 other-modules: M1 ghc-options: -prof -auto-all -hisuf p_hi -osuf p_o The aim is to build foo (of M2) as a library, then to make Main under the package foo, and with profiling. The Visual Haskell team are proud to announce the first preview release of Visual Haskell, version 0.0. Visual Haskell is a complete development environment for Haskell software, based on Microsoft's Visual Studio platform. Visual Haskell integrates with the Visual Studio editor to provide interactive features to aid Haskell development, and it enables the construction of projects consisting of multiple Haskell modules, using the Cabal building/packaging infrastructure. Visual Haskell is a complete system in one download: it includes a full GHC installation with libraries, and various tools including Haddock, Happy, and Alex. In order to use Visual Haskell, you need an x86 machine running Windows, and Visual Studio .NET 2003. Downloads, screenshots and documentation here: http://www.haskell.org/visualhaskell/ Please note that this is a preview release - please download and try it out, but don't expect a production quality experience. GHC-6.4.1 on FreeBSD-amd64 still not ported

Though I have reported some sort of success on this in the last days, I was too early. The ghc-inplace does not work on the target system. It compiled because I have been too lax in following the instructions. A quick reply before running to ICFP The trouble with CAFs is this ints :: [Int] ints = [1,2..] f a b = ...ints... The 'ints' CAF is alive at any point in program execution at which 'f' can be called in the future. But a call to 'f' may be represented only by a reference to f's entry point in some x86 code block; it does not mean that f's closure is reachable by the garbage collector. GHC fixes this by adding, to each code block, a static table of pointers to other code blocks that it might call; and to any static closures (like 'ints') that it uses directly. The garbage collector traverses the code graph via these static tables, to find all the CAFs that are still reachable. Unreachable CAFs are garbage collected as usual. It's all a major pain, and all the more so because it's usually only naïve programs that contain CAFs. Real programs tend to depend on data read at runtime, and don't have large CAFs. Alas, naïve programs are the ones people write on day 1, and we had lots of anguished cries that turned out to be CAF space leaks. So we bit the bullet some years ago and did the full code-graph thing. As a result, we removed many optimiser hacks which were there solely to avoid generating new CAFs that the programmer had not written.
