porting ghc-6.4 to x86_64

Hello! I know that this has been done already (at least by RedHat), but since I don't use RedHat (or any other distro of linux) and instead compiled everything myself, I have to bootstrap ghc as well. So I'm carefully following the instruction. On my host (i386) I have ghc-6.2.2 (and ghc-6.4). Looks like I have some problem. As far as I understand this should fail. $ cd H/ghc && make boot && make ..... ==fptools== make all -r; in /usr/local/src/ghc-6.4/ghc/rts 6.4 vs 6.2.2 can't compile darcs-1.0.2
by Andrei A. Voropaev 18 Mar '05

18 Mar '05

Hello! Today I've tried to compile darcs-1.0.2 and for that I've installed the ghc-6.4-i386-unknown-linux.tar.bz2 (in-place) When I tried to compile, configure script from darcs complained that it couldn't figure out how to do OpenFd (or someting similar). Then I've installed ghc-6.2.2-i386-unknown-linux.tar.bz2 (also in-place). Now compilation was sucessfull. Are these 2 versions not compatible? -- Minds, like parachutes, function best when open

RE: [Haskell] GHC: Setting default +RTS options at compile time?
by Simon Peyton-Jones 18 Mar '05

18 Mar '05

[Redirecting to GHC users, which is the right place for GHC related questions.] | Is there any way to specify at compile/link time default options for GHC | program +RTS options? No. This is a long-standing feature request. It makes perfect sense, but needs someone to design and implement it. So far not enough people have yelled loudly enough for us to do it. Any volunteers? Simon | <aside> | Why do I want this? I'm using GHC to write a program that will be used by | non-comp uting people to preprocess some data in conjunction with an 18Mb | database file. To load the database into a Data.Map value requires more | than GHC's default 256Mb of heap, and I'd like to increase the program's | default heap size, rather than telling users to use the +RTS -M100M option, | as its one less thing to get wrong. There are of course other possible | solutions, but in this case specifying a default heap size at compile time | seems to be the most natural. | </aside>

How can I make a counter without Monad?
by Nicolas Oury 18 Mar '05

18 Mar '05

Greetings, In a program, I want to give a unique name to some structures. As it is the only imperative thing I need, I don't want to use a monad. I have played with two solutions and have some questions : * unsafePerformIO : I create a counter : counter :: IORef Int counter = unsafePerformIO (newIORef 0) {-# NOINLINE counter #-} and a function to give a unique name: newNode a = unsafePerformIO $ do i <- readIORef counter writeIORef counter (i+1) return (i,a) {-# NOINLINE newNode #-} I now want to write a function : foo a = let n = newNode a in (n,n) How can I make sure ghc won't reduce it to foo a = (newNode a, newNode a) ? * linear implicit parameters instance Splittable Int where split n = (2*n,2*n+1) But I have a problem : the counter value increases exponentially. (I can only count up to 32 elements...) Is there another way to split Int? Are there other ways to implement a counter in Haskell? Thanks for your help, Best regards, Nicolas Oury

Haskell on Red Hat Enterprise...
by Francois Meehan 18 Mar '05

18 Mar '05

Hi all, I need Haskell to be installed on a Red advance server 3. Could not find RPM's for it. Tried compiling for tar file, won't pass the ./configure, giving me "configure: error: GHC is required unless bootstrapping from .hc files." error. Could someone give me some pointers on how to do this? Regards, Francois Random Thought: --------------- What nature delivers to us is never stale. I suggest adding the layout tokens to the let-expression to fix it. Cheers, Simon

We've no objection to making changes to GHC to make it easy to use in conjuction with cpphs (./configure --with-cpps or whatever), so 3rd-party packagers can provide GHC packages that use cpphs if they wish. However, we won't be adding cpphs to the GHC source tree, or requiring it to be installed to build GHC, or shipping it in the standard distributions. Cheers, Simon

It did strike me as a little strange (magic, even?) that the result of compiling a module named explicitly on the GHC command line is different from the implicit compilation performed when chasing imports. (I think I understand *why* it happens, but it still seems a little strange.) By way of exploring the issue, rather than actually asking for any of the following to be done, some thoughts I had are: (a) generate the program initialization/finalization entry points in a separate .o file from the compiled module, and include that in the link. (b) use a different output filename (e.g. module_main.o) when compiling a module as a program entry point. (c) combination of (a) and (b) - compile base module as non-main, and a separate output file for the program startup magic with a name based on but different from the corresponding source module. >I'll add a note to the >-main-is documentation though.
