After hc-build, you should unpack a completely fresh GHC source tree, somewhere else. Then 'cd' into this tree, and issue the configure/make commands. You're using the compiler you built originally, which is unregisterised and builds unregisterised binaries, to build a new compiler which will generate registerised binaries. Cheers, Simon

Syntax for output-only arrows?
by Lauri Alanko 15 Jun '04

15 Jun '04

When I use arrows, I find that many of my primitives are of type (a () b) (for some arrow type a): they produce a value but don't take any input. E.g. deterministic parsers are like this. The syntactic sugar for arrows is lovely, but I find it a bit tedious writing "foo -< ()" all the time. The syntax allows the output of arrows to be ignored, why not input too? Would it cause unreasonable parsing problems simply to allow a simple expression of an arrow type to be a legal command inside a proc expression, with an implicit -< () input? Or are there other reasons against it? I for one find it extremely convenient that I can write "purely imperative" code with a simple syntax like do { foo; bar; baz }. I'd like similar simplicity when dealing with arrows, too. Lauri Alanko la(a)iki.fi

You probably don't want to install the registerised build; just use it to build a fresh tree: $ ./configure --with-ghc=/unregisterised-build/ghc/compiler/ghc-inplace $ make If your platform supports registerised compilation, then this *should* just work. You can create a DLL of Haskell code on Windows, but only of a complete self-contained library (ie. you can't split your Haskell library into several DLLs and link them together at runtime). On Unix, shared libraries are more difficult. It might be possible to make a single .so of a Haskell library, but I'm not sure. Alternatively you can use Don Stewart's hs-plugin package (announced here recently). Cheers, Simon

As i said before this works > when i use "cat". GHC uses non-blocking I/O operations and select() to manage multi-threaded I/O, which would explain why you are seeing different behaviour compared to cat(1). If this is a home-grown device, I respectfully suggest :-) that you check the behaviour of the device when used with non-blocking I/O and select(). Try strace to see what system calls are in the loop. If it is select(), then perhaps the device is wrongly flagging select() when there is no data available? Cheers, Simon

Unfortunately it means we can't use string gaps in CPP'd source any more. Until we move to cpphs, I'll have to remove all string gaps from our sources. Sigh. Cheers, Simon

dynamically loading the dynamic loader
by dons＠cse.unsw.edu.au 15 Jun '04

At the moment I am unable to load the hs-plugins package into GHCi (or via the hs-plugins load() either). It seems the linker is always unable to find the symbols we bind to in Linker.c, i.e. addDLL, loadObj, and friends. How can I get the linker to see the HSrts/libHSrts symbols exported by Linker.c, or is something more nefarious at work? Here is a transcript: paprika$ ghci -package plugins ___ ___ _ / _ \ /\ /\/ __(_) / /_\// /_/ / / | | GHC Interactive, version 6.3, for Haskell 98. / /_\\/ __ / /___| | http://www.haskell.org/ghc/ \____/\/ /_/\____/|_| Type :? for help. Loading package lang ... linking ... done. Loading package posix ... linking ... done. Loading package haskell98 ... linking ... done. Loading package haskell-src ... linking ... done. Loading package plugins ... linking ... /home/dons/lib/hs-plugins/HSplugins.o: unknown symbol `addDLL' ghc-6.3: panic! (the `impossible' happened, GHC version 6.3): can't load package `plugins' Please report it as a compiler bug to glasgow-haskell-bugs(a)haskell.org, or http://sourceforge.net/projects/ghc/. On MacOS it can't find loadObj. Now, obviously the rts is actually loaded and running, but we can't see addDLL. I've tried making the package depend on the rts, which doesn't do much. I've also added the Linker.c symbols into the linker symbol table explicitly using SymX() and Sym(), with no success. Linking against hs-plugins statically works fine, of course. Any ideas? -- Don

This is exactly the problem. To fix it, you need to implement the suggestion from the comment: i.e. somehow make it so that there is only one copy of the hash table rather than two. You could do this by keeping the hash table in a variable in the RTS, perhaps. I don't know why you get differing String representation of types, though. It doesn't have anything to do with Core types, I'm pretty sure. Cheers, Simon
