GHC Lexer
by Steffen Mazanek 15 Oct '03

15 Oct '03

Hello, to add a new keyword, say "struct" to the GHC, I have added ITstruct to data type Token in module Lex.lhs. Further on I have adapted ghcExtensionKeywordsFM. Is this already sufficient for lexing? In LexCore there is a function lexKeyword without a comment. It is called by lexer if the first character is %. What does this mean? Thank you, Steffen

ghc-6.0.1 solaris 2.9 readline problem
by Matt Fairtlough 14 Oct '03

14 Oct '03

I've just installed the solaris2.8 binary package for ghc-6.0.1 I confess that I am running solaris2.9, which may be the cause of the problem, in which case I suppose I need to wait. But perhaps my problem is more general. I am trying to build HaLeX, a library for processing automata and regular expressions. I have readline.h and history.h in /usr/local/include/readline, so the following error message is puzzling to me: HaLeX:make ghc --make -I./src -i./src -package util -O2 ./src/Main.hs -o ./bin/halex Chasing modules from: ./src/Main.hs Compiling RegExp ( ./src/RegExp.hs, ./src/RegExp.o ) ./src/RegExp.hs:20: Warning: `RegExp' is exported by `RegExp' and `RegExp(..)' In file included from /tmp/ghc18853.hc:6: /home/matt/lib/ghc-6.0.1/include/HsReadline.h:5: readline/readline.h: No such file or directory /home/matt/lib/ghc-6.0.1/include/HsReadline.h:6: readline/history.h: No such file or directory make: *** [halex] Error 1 I've searched for this issue but only found references to building ghc5 any help much appreciated. GHC with MS .Net 2003 C compiler
by Andreas.Schroeder＠gillardon.de 14 Oct '03

14 Oct '03

Hi all, i am just evaluating Haskell (GHC) for the use in the company i work. I have done some performance tests with Haskell, Java and C++ for some finance mathematical algorithms (you know, some folks are addicted to performance - not i). Unfortunately, pure Haskell did not perform very well. I then used a hybrid solution with some foreing called C code (25 lines of C) to get some boost on performance after some profiling analysis on "where is all the time gone?". I don't know exactly why, but even with the optimize flags on, the hybrid haskell solution takes six times longer than the C++ version compiled with the MS .Net 2003 C++ compiler. This one is even three times faster than the cygwin C++ compiler itself. That's what made me think: could i use the MS .Net 2003 C compiler to get the GHC libraries object code and then link them with the generated C code from GHC compiled again with the MS compiler? If it's possible, how to? Can anyone anticipate a performance improvement (like i do - well, at least i hope)? Btw, if you're interested, java (JDK 1.4.2_01 Server JVM) takes twice the time of MS .Net compiled C++ for my test. If you want, i can also post the Haskell code i tested. Regards, Andreas Schroeder

Haddock warnings for unresolved prelude functions
by Juanma Barranquero 10 Oct '03

10 Oct '03

I'm using Haddock 0.5, compiled for GHC 6.0.1, and I get warnings when "haddock"ing a simple module: Warning: module not found: Prelude Warning: MyModule: the following names could not be resolved: Prelude.[] Bool Eq I can see what's happening: I'm not passing Prelude.hs to Haddock, but I'm using pPrelude functions. But I don't want to pass it a Prelude.hs and don't want the warnings either. Is there any way to force it to be silent about unresolved Prelude functions? (I tried --no-implicit-prelude, but the warnings are still there). Thanks, /L/e/k/t/u

getSignalMask ghc6.0.1
by Shawn P. Garbett 09 Oct '03

09 Oct '03

I'm trying to understand the ghc signal implementation. I can't do much with the provided examples, because getSignalMask exits the program with: Fail: invalid argument Action: getSignalMask Reason: Invalid argument I'm using FreeBSD 5.0 with ghc6.0.1. Is there any tutorials or explanations about posix signals/threads in ghc out there? Shawn

It's a definite bug. It'll be fixed in 6.02. Thanks for reporting it. Pre-Call for Contributions -- HC&A Report (November 2003 edition)
by C.Reinke 02 Oct '03

02 Oct '03

[apologies for multiple copies - experience has shown that not all Haskellers can be reached via the main Haskell list anymore] An entry for your diaries (no other action required right now): ------------------------------Pre-Call-------------------------------- Your contributions to the November 2003 edition of the Haskell Communities & Activities Report will be invited soon. http://www.haskell.org/communities/ Submissions are welcome between 20th and 31st of October ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The real Call for Contributions will follow closer to the submission window, in about two weeks. This is just an early warning. You will need to plan about 15 minutes for composing your contribution, which would be a brief, ASCII-format, description of your Haskell activities (see earlier editions for plenty of examples). Cheers, Claus (current editor of HC&A Reports)

I NEED YOUR URGENT ASSISTANCE
by MR.WANG QIN 01 Oct '03

01 Oct '03

FROM THE DESK OF: MR.WANG QIN HANG SENG BANK LTD. DES VOEUX RD.BRANCH CENTRAL HONG KONG HONG KONG. Dear Friend, I am MR.WANG QIN, credit officer of Hang Seng Bank Ltd; I have an urgent and very confidential business proposition for you. On June 6, 1998, a British Oil consultant/ contractor with the Chinese Solid Minerals Corporation, Mr. Smith Lawrence made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at US$28,000,000.00 (Twenty-eight Million Dollars only) in my branch. Upon maturity, I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract employers, the Hong Kong Solid Minerals Corporation that Mr. Smith Lawrence died from an automobile accident. On further investigation, I found out that he died with out making a WILL,and all attempts to trace his next of kin was fruitless. I therefore made further investigation and discovered that Mr. Smith Lawrence did not declare any kin or relations in all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit paperwork in my Bank. This sum of US$28,000,000.00 is still sitting in my Bank and the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one will ever come forward to claim it. According to Laws of Hong Kong,at the expiration of 5 (Five) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the Hong Kong Government if nobody applies to claim the fund. Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand in as the next of Kin to Mr. Smith Lawrence so that the fruits of this old man's labour will not get into the Hands of some corrupt government officials. This is simple, I will like you to provide Immediately your full names and address so th at the attorney will prepare the necessary Documents and affidavits that will put you in place as the next of kin. We shall employ the services of an attorney for drafting and notarization of the WILL and to obtain the Necessary documents and letter of probate/ administration in your favour for the transfer. A bank account in any part of the world that you will provide will then facilitate the transfer of this money to you as the beneficiary/next of kin. The money will be paid into your account for us to share in the ratio of 85% for me and 15% for you. There is no risk at all as the attorney will do all the paperwork for this transaction and my position as the credit officer guarantees the successful execution of this transaction. If you are interested, please reply immediately via my emailbox Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more details and relevant documents that will help you understand the transaction. Please send me your confidential telephone and fax numbers for easy communication. You should observe utmost confidentiality, and rest assured that this transaction would be Most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to invest my share in Your country. Awaiting your urgent reply. Thanks and regards. MR.WANG QIN
