There isn't a standalone program, no. But why do you want one? The code, and (I believe accurate) accompanying comments are in fptools/ghc/compiler/OccName.lhs. It would be fairly simple to extract this into a standalone program if you wanted to do so. RE: debug with GHC FFI?

Trying to add a "-g" flag doesn't seem help at all... You should be able to debug the normal C code using gdb. If the crash happens somewhere in Haskell code, then gdb is of less use (unless you happen to know the details of GHC's execution model). It sounds like in your case the crash is happening somewhere in Haskell. There are a few possible approaches: - If it is a callback into Haskell that is crashing, you should be able to use gdb to find which call into Haskell is the culprit, which might give you some clues. - use Debug.Trace.trace in the Haskell code to narrow down the bug. Ugly, but very useful. - Robert Ennals is working on a debugger for GHC as part of his speculative evaluation work. It's very much a work in progress though, and I haven't tried it myself yet. It's in ghc/utils/hs-debug on the speceval_2 branch of CVS. Cheers, Simon

In the current CVS sources, the procedure is somewhat easier: a 'make' from the top-level will automatically to a 2-stage bootstrap, and there are options for doing 3-stage or just a 1-stage build too. How to build ghci?
by Duncan Coutts 24 Feb '03

24 Feb '03

Hi all, I can't seem to get ghc to build so that ghci is enabled. I've tried building the tar and I've tried the Red Hat .src.rpm, which works but doesn't enable ghci on my system. I'm using Mandrake 9.0 which comes with gcc 3.2 and gcc 2.96 I'm building ghc to use gcc 2.96 (since it chokes on Mandrake's gcc 3.2). ghci reports: ghc-5.04.2: not built for interactive use Is there anything special I have to do to enable ghci? Is there something odd / missing from Mandrke's build environment? Duncan

> Will this release include the -odir fix (the one for > hiearchical names)? I'm afraid not. That part of the compiler has changed a lot relative to the 5.04.x branch, the fix is non-trivial, and I don't feel confident making that kind of change at this stage of the release cycle. "Better the devil you know". Using make instead of --make, and explicit -o options instead of -odir, should let you workaround the problem. Cheers, Simon

Perhaps the stg_raise_info info table > has enough information? Since raise closures don't have their own closure types, the only way is to compare the closure's info pointer against stg_raise_info. This is fine, and we use the same technique in several other places in the RTS. Cheers, Simon

identifying a raise_closure from C
by Bernard James POPE 24 Feb '03

Hi all, In C, I have an StgClosure pointer, pointing to a THUNK. I would like to know whether this particular THUNK is a raise_closure, (as built by raisezh_fast() in rts/Exception.hc). Is there any identifying information I can use to tell definitely whether this THUNK is a raise_closure? Perhaps the stg_raise_info info table has enough information? Thanks heaps, Bernie.
