Furthermore the road to porting GHC is long and tortuous :-( We do have a port for Macs running Darwin, however I'm guessing that's quite different to Debian (Darwin has Apple's special version of GCC for one thing). Weird profiling behaviour

Hi, I have what I think is a really strange problem. I have a fair sized problem, which involves sorting a data set, first on labels (which are Strings) and then on scores (which are Ints). The strange thing is that string sorting is *vastly* faster than int scoring! Now, I've tried modifying the sorting routinges, moving them into the same module, and so on, to no avail. Is there any likely explanation? The pipeline is basically sortBy int_cmp . compound_equal . sortBy string_cmp I hesitate to post the code, since it's part of a rather large program, and in the hope that somebody will pop up and say that oh, yes, it's a well know feature of 'sortBy'. Or that it's an artifact of profiling. Or something like that. Any, and I mean any, suggestions really, really welcome. -kzm -- If I haven't seen further, it is by standing in the footprints of giants

Does it have source or binary files or both? GHC looks for .hi files and .o files, whereas GHCi also looks for .hs files. Building GHC shouldn't really require Happy, but there's a bug in the 5.02 source distribution which means that the configure script complains if you don't have Happy installed. Hacking the configure script to remove the check will get you going. (as Simon said you still need GHC, though). Cheers, Simon

I have an alternative HTML library if you are interested... it uses an intermediate representation (a DOM style model) and defines the type ShowDOM = DOM -> DOM , allowing efficent concatination using function composition, finally a layer on top of this using the type ShowDOM -> (a,ShowDOM), instanciating a Monad allows monadic composition of html pages - there is also some static type checking done by creating the types: newtype HtmlFragment = HtmlFragment (ShowDOM -> (a,ShowDOM)) newtype HtmlTableFragment = HtmlTableFragment (ShowDOM -> (a,ShowDOM)) etc... this allows you to compose HTML as in the following example attrTable [MkAttribute ("cellspacing","0")] ( do htmlTR (attrTD [MkAttribute ("colspan","2")] $ htmlText "Test Cell 1")) htmlTR ( do htmlTD (htmlText "Cell 2 (Left)") htmlTD (htmlText "Cell 3 (Right)"))) If you (or anyone) are interested let me know ... It appears that building GHC requires Happy. It appears that building Happy requires GHC. How does one bootstrap this thing ? Building GHC requires GHC too, not just Happy. The best thing to do is usually to download and install both GHC and Happpy, which is what the building guide recommends http://haskell.cs.yale.edu/ghc/docs/latest/building/sec-pre-supposed.htm l You can get away with downloading just GHC, building Happy, and then building GHC.
