I don't know, probably historical reasons: as far as I can remember, GHC's version numbers always had two digits after the decimal point. I seem to recall that the C standard doesn't guarantee that this constant is representable in the int type: I think it has to do with the fact that the C standard doesn't proscribe 2's complement arithmetic, and in 1's complement you can't fit -2^63 in an int. Weird porting problem with read

Background: I'm working on porting GHC to IA64. I have the initial unregisterised port mostly working, except for a weird problem related to this innocent bit of code (ghc/compiler/main/CmdLineOpts.hs): opt_HiVersion = read (cProjectVersionInt ++ cProjectPatchLevel) :: Int where: cProjectVersionInt = "503" cProjectPatchLevel = "0" I get... ghc-5.03: panic! (the `impossible' happened, GHC version 5.03): Prelude.read: no parse Possibly of relevance is that cProjectVersionInt is built using unpackCStringList#, whereas cProjectPatchLevel was generated statically. Below I've included an ASCII art depiction of the closure that is passed to read, after evaluation (i.e. I breakpointed after the parse error). It looks feasibly correct to me, although I may be missing something. Does anyone have any hints on where to proceed from here? Hi all, In spite of all the warnings, I tried to build ghc 5.02.3 from scratch. The first step, > ./distrib/hc-build returned the error >make[1]: *** No rule to make target `Addr.o', needed by `libHSlang.a'. Stop. >make: *** [all] Error 1 I'm actually building on a standard Linux x86 platform. The resaon I want to build from scratch is to incorporate GHC into the portage source tree for the Gentoo distribution, http://www.gentoo.org Tom

infix type constructors

I'm not sure how long this has been implemented in GHC, but I just noticed that infix type constructors are allowed, as in data a :- b = ... The syntactic asymmetry between type constructors and data contructors has bothered me for a while, so this is a welcome change! However, this syntax seems to be supported for "data" and "newtype" declarations, but not for "type" declarations. For example, type a :- b = ... does not seem to be allowed. Is there a reason for this? Or was it just an oversight? -- Chris

The > resaon I want to > build from scratch is to incorporate GHC into the portage > source tree for > the Gentoo distribution, http://www.gentoo.org The way I'm doing this for the FreeBSD port now is to have the build process download a pre-built cut-down binary distribution of GHC purely for bootstrapping. We used to bootstrap from .hc files in the ports tree but after a while it was just too fragile and hard to get right. Cheers, Simon

Absolutely. GHC should complain if you mix profiled and non-profiled code but it currently doesn't. You'll certainly get disaster if you mix them. (The format of heap objects changes.) I bet that's your problem. S
