Heap profiling

Hi, I really like the profiling options in GHC, but I wonder if there's any good way of improving heap profiling speed? I've tried using -i to reduce the number of measurements, but it didn't seem to help a lot. I see an order of magnitude speed degradation with heap profiling, which is slightly annoying, since it is with large runs heap consumption starts to become troublesome :-) Any tricks I ought to know about? -kzm -- If I haven't seen further, it is by standing in the footprints of giants

ghc-pkg info

It would be nice if ghc-pkg had options to display the value of $libdir or at least the given conf file. I'm trying to get my Autotools configure script to find Rts.h, and it's a bit of a pain. My current approach is to use "readlink -f `which ghc`" and get it from there, but that fails with the latest MacOS X version because it uses small shell scripts in unusual places instead of symlinks. -- Ashley Yakeley, Seattle WA

parfib suite for ghc 0.29

[1] Bug1? This declaration: > A = (,) Int Int is accepted by ghci. Is this behaveour correct, 1. It kind of shadows (,) is defined in PrelTup meaning that you can no longer use (,) prefix to refer to tuples - like (,) 1 2. 2. Seems to me like (,) is not correct syntax for a consym as defined in the H98 Report so we shouldn't be able to redefine it. Note: didn't check any other interpreter/compiler. [2] Bug2? - Step 1 Load this in ghci, ----------------------- module Test where data C = C ((,) Int Int) data A = (,) !Int !Int h :: A h = (,) 1 2 {- f :: C f = C ((,) 3 4) -} ------------------------ - Step 2 Uncomment the f function. (you'll get an error function) - Step 3 To get rid of the error comment out the 'data A' declaration and function 'h'. Now you should get this error message: ------------------------------------------------- Failed to find interface decl for `Teste.A' from module `Teste' ------------------------------------------------- [3] Strict Pairs question I really miss them :-) I know I can do something like data A a b= A !a !b But then you can't use zips fst etc etc... One possible solution would be to add some Class Pair, with default instances for these functions. Is this a bad idea for any particular reason? It would also be nice to be able to generalize the idea syntatic sugar for standar tuples and be able to define constructors like, say (:,:) and (#:, , :#) etc. Is this feasable? J.A.

ghc5.03 .hi and .hi-boot files don't you just love those incompatible changes?

Formerly .hi and .hi-boot files had the same format; however ghc5.03 has a binary format for .hi files and a textual one for .hi-boot files. This is a nuisance for me, because I have an ingenious scheme by which .hi-boot files are themselves from Haskell files by ghc, which thinks it is generating .hi files. Since I don't particularly want to go from writing to Haskell to writing interface files, I would like to keep the old scheme, but then I need a way of getting GHC to generate .hi-boot files from .hs files. One might think the options -ddump-hi or --show-iface would do the job, but they don't. --show-iface produces a file which causes Haskell later to choke with the message failed to load interface for `DisplayView': Bad interface file: DisplayView.hi-boot DisplayView.hi-boot:1: parse error on input `__interface' -ddump-hi is even worse, since it adds an extra two totally useless lines at the start (but otherwise appears to be the same as --show-iface). So is there any way of getting GHC to generate .hi-boot files? Or should I give up on using .hi-boot altogether and simply compile the Haskell direct to the .hi file?
