I'm afraid I've rather lost track of this thread. Would someone care to summarise, on a wiki page perhaps? I think the story is: * Inspired by Nick's idea, Iavor and Pedro have converged on a single, type-family-based style for defining singletons. * This style no longer requires Any to be a data type, so I can turn it back into a type family, which is a Good Thing because it paves the way for an eta rule. It is important that the instances are polymorphic because this tells GHC that it is allowed to use the instance in any context as long as the kinds match, regardless of the actual type. Note that this is not the case if we write the instance using the singleton member of the proxy kind: data KindProxy (k :: *) = KindProxy instance SingE ('KindProxy :: KindProxy Nat) Integer where fromSing (SNat n) = n Such instances would only work if GHC could see that the type is 'KindProxy so if we have a type variable of the correct kind, the instance would not reduce. This is related to the eta-expansion issue---if we eliminated `Any`, then GHC could perform a kind-based improvement to deduce that the type variable must be equal to `KindProxy`, because this is the only type with the correct kind. 2. As Nick noticed, we are not doing any fancy type computing in the class, so we don't actually need any KindProxy elements---we are just doing overloading based on a kind rather than a type. To emphasize this I made Kind an empty type/kind and GHC is still happy: instances are resolved as intended. But... `Kind` has no elements so what are the instances applied to? The only reason this works is that GHC has defaulted the instances to use `Any`. To me this seems a bit sketchy. So what to do? Changing the code in this style (using the normal non-empty proxy) makes sense because I think that it would allow us to change `Any` into a type function rather than a type constructor, like Simon did and un-did recently. The reason I think this will work is because now there will be no uses of `Any` in the definitions of the instances, it will only appear in the uses of the instances. Furthermore, I think it makes sense for GHC to check that for each use of the type function `Any`, the kind where it is used is non-empty. I'm not sure how easy it would be to implement that, so maybe we can deal with it later. -Iavor

Nicolas, thanks for the welcome, and thanks for pointing out the additional 'Type' constructors! I'd looked over the available constructors, but apparently not very well. The 'ListT', 'TupleT', 'ArrowT', etc., constructors are precisely what I need to make this work in a straightforward fashion. So I don't actually have a problem making the right 'Name' value, just a problem reading the TH source. Well, that's that. ... The reason it can't is because when you look at the resulting signature for the MPTC it generates it looks like class IMonad k m where ireturn :: a x -> m a x However, there doesn't appear to be a way to say that the kind k should be determined by m. I tried doing: class IMonad (m :: (k -> *) -> k -> *) | m -> k where ireturn :: a x -> m a x Surprisingly (to me) this compiles and generates the correct constraints for IMonad: ghci> :set -XPolyKinds -XKindSignatures -XFunctionalDependencies -XDataKinds -XGADTs ghci> class IMonad (m :: (k -> *) -> k -> *) | m -> k where ireturn :: a x -> m a x ghci> :info IMonad class IMonad k m | m -> k where ireturn :: a x -> m a x But when I add ghci> :{ Prelude| data Thrist :: ((i,i) -> *) -> (i,i) -> * where Prelude| Nil :: Thrist a '(i,i) Prelude| (:-) :: a '(i,j) -> Thrist a '(j,k) -> Thrist a '(i,k) Prelude| :} and attempt to introduce the instance, I crash: ghci> instance IMonad Thrist where ireturn a = a :- Nil ghc: panic! Within the module, IMonad has a type that includes the kind k and the constraint on it from m. But from the other module, :info shows no such constraint, and the above code again fails to typecheck, but upon trying to recompile, when GHC goes to load the IMonad instance from the core file, it panicks again differently about references to a variable not present in the core. Is there any way to make such a constraint that determines a kind from a type parameter in GHC 7.6 at this time? I tried the Kind hack used in GHC.TypeLits, but it doesn't seem to be applicable to this situation. -Edward

Well, it does not seem so. Although around 7.0, there were patches to make gold ld work. But until now, the configure script is still missing something. For example, it checks that gold ld is GNU ld. Thus it uses ldscript to input .o files. But in fact, at least the version I am using, gold ld does not take relative paths from ldscript. After a few modifications to the root configure script (not others for libraries). I got it make-able. Now I am stuck at install step. The error is no HsBase.o file.... Does ghc 7.6.1 support gold ld?

Hi, Since gold ld (GNU gold (GNU Binutils for Debian 2.22) 1.11) somehow better than ld, so I am using it in my debian box. Now I want to compile ghc 7.6.1 with it. And I have modified the configure script to skip checking --hash-size, --reduce-memory-overheads and if is gnu ld (all fixed to NO). And using normal build ghc 7.6.1. I got following errors. what are good starter tasks for getting involved with ghc dev?

Hey All, I'm interested in getting involved in (/ helping out ) with dev work on GHC, what are good ways to get started on tackling smaller bits in the near term? (better to do simple things before more ambitious things after all!) should i just go through the issue tracker for tasks or bugs that are un assigned that I think i can do, and see if I can do them? thanks!-Carter

copyArray# bug

I've been chasing a segfault in the dev version of vector and I think I finally traced it to a bug in the implementation of copyArray# and copyMutableArray#. More specifically, I think emitSetCards in StgCmmPrim.hs (and CgPrimOp.hs) will sometimes fail to mark the last card as dirty because in the current implementation, the number of cards to mark is computed solely from the number of copied elements while it really depends on which cards the first and the last elements belong to. That is, the number of elements to copy might be less than the number of elements per card but the copied range might still span two cards. The attached patch fixes this (and the segfault in vector) and also makes copyArray# return immediately if the number of elements to copy is 0. Could someone who is familiar with the code please review it and tell me if it looks sensible. If it does, I'll make the same modification to CgPrimOp.hs (which has exactly the same code) and commit. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to write a testcase for this since the bug is only triggered in very specific circumstances. It seems that all released versions of GHC that implement copyArray#/copyMutableArray# have this problem. At least, vector's testsuite now segfaults with all of them in roughly the same place after recent modifications I've made (which involve calling copyArray# a lot). If I'm right then I would suggest not to use copyArray# and copyMutableArray# for GHC < 7.8. Roman

Recompiling a module fails

I'm currently having a problem with compiling modules. I have two files Data.hs and Class.hs (Class depends on Data). When I compile Class.hs (ghc --make Class.hs) the ghc does what it should do. When I now make a change to Class.hs (add a newline to the end of the file for example) and try to run ghc --make Class.hs again the ghc gets stuck on recompiling Class.hs. I think this is a bug in the GHC, can anybody confirm this? (it only occurs in GHC-7.6.1 both x86 and i386 versions, GHC-7.4 doesn't have this problem, I only tried it on OS X). Or did I miss something else? It doesn't happen when the Exp data type in Data.hs only has one constructor. Installing binary tarball fails on Linux

Hi, I tried to install the GHC 7.4.1 32-bit binary tarball today and ran into the error below. Are 32-bit GHC's not supported on 64-bit Linuxes? The error: Installing library in /usr/local/lib/ghc-7.4.1/ghc-prim-0.2.0.0 ghc-cabal: Bad interface file: dist-install/build/GHC/Classes.hi magic number mismatch: old/corrupt interface file? seemingly inconsistent behavior for "kind-indexed" type constraints in GHC 7.6

GHC 7.6 is rejecting some programs that I think ought to be well-typed. Details here https://gist.github.com/3842579 I find this behavior particularly odd because I can get GHC to deduce the type equalities in some contexts but not in others. In particular, it does not deduce them inside of type class instances. Is this a known issue? I'll create a Trac ticket if that's appropriate. Thanks for your time.
