"make install" is probably broken at the moment. You should be able to use it in-place, though (run compiler/stage2/ghc-inplace).
Thanks Ian. In fact, the stable branch will be suitable for my needs so I'll stick to that and I don't suppose I'll find this there? If I do I'll use your suggestion. Jim
