Well, you can, but only for CAFs. This idiom/hack is used quite happily throughout GHC, HOpenGL, H/Direct, ...
I think "quite happily" is a bit strong ;-) We'd much rather have a safe way to do what is really quite a reasonable thing. Cheers, Simon
