1. zlib: the package from hackage seems to work flawlessly.
2. http: the one in hackage doesn't build [1], I'm using:

Is that what I should be doing? I get those warnings about base [2].
This will be fixed by both a new point release of HTTP, but more generally this will be fixed by using the soft preferences which we'll include in the hackage index and which will be used by the upcomming cabal-install release.
3. Cabal: should I use the one that comes with GHC or upgrade to the darcs version?
