Hi folks, For the forthcoming 6.4 release, we'd like to get a rough idea of download statistics, at least from haskell.org. Both Simon & I are too busy/lazy (delete as applicable) to do this ourselves, and we don't know the best tools to use (grep|wc on the access_log is a bit too crude - we want to exclude things like partial downloads except when the download was completed later, etc.). Of course, if we can get or estimate download statistics for other sources of GHC too, that would be great. Any volunteers? Cheers, Simon

I would guess that the majority of users these days get their ghc packaged with a distro (eg Fedora, Debian, FreeBSD, Gentoo, Mandrake). Windows users are probably the only major group who get it straight from Haskell.org. Collecting download statistics for these distros is extremely difficult since they mirror their packages so widely. So don't be surprised if the windows users come out very well represented! Duncan

You can see how the number of Debian ghc6 users with the popularity-contest package installed has varied with time here: http://people.debian.org/~igloo/popcon-graphs/index.php?packages=ghc6&show_installed=on&show_vote=on&show_old=on&show_recent=on&show_nofiles=on&want_legend=on&beenhere=1 You can also compare, e.g., the number of people with ghc6, ghc5, nhc98 and hugs installed: http://people.debian.org/~igloo/popcon-graphs/index.php?packages=ghc6+ghc5+nhc98+hugs&show_installed=on&want_legend=on&beenhere=1 There is some other info on http://popcon.debian.org/ too, e.g. http://popcon.debian.org/main/by_inst shows that ghc6 is about 5329 of 18122 if your order packages by number of installations today. Of course, we only get numbers from those users who opt in by installing popularity-contest, which makes drawing conclusions from it harder :-) Enjoy, Ian

Why not ask GHC users to fill some web form with additional information, like how they use GHC, where they use it, for what, etc? I can make a suitable web form in WASH, if you want. Best regards Tomasz -- Szukamy programisty C++ i Haskell'a: http://tinyurl.com/5mw4e
