Commutative monads vs Applicative functors

I have a few questions about commutative monads and applicative functors. >From what I have read about applicative functors, they are weaker than monads because with a monad, I can use the results of a computation to select between alternative future computations and their side effects, whereas with an applicative functor, I can only select between the results of computations, while the structure of those computations and their side effects are fixed in advance. But then there are commutative monads. I'm not exactly sure what a commutative monad is, but my understanding is that in a commutative monad the order of side effects does not matter. This leads me to wonder, are commutative monads still stronger than applicative functors, or are they equivalent? And by the way, what exactly is a commutative monad?

Cannot understand liftM2

Hi All, I'm loving learning Haskell quite a bit. It is stretching my brain but in a delightfull way. I've googled, I've hoogled but I haven't found a clear explanation for what exactly liftM2 does in the context below. Using the cool lambdabot "pointless" utility I found out that: > \x -> snd(x) - fst(x) is the same as: > liftM2 (-) snd fst I like the elegance of this but I cannot reconcile it with its type. I can't understand it. I check the signature of liftM2 and I get: Prelude> :t liftM2 Prelude> liftM2 :: (Monad m) => (a1 -> a2 -> r) -> m a1 -> m a2 -> m r Can someone help me understand what's happening here ? What does a Monad have to do with a simple subtraction ? What is actually the "m" of my example ? I am sure if I get this I'll be another step closer to illumination ... Thanks, Nick

Infinite types should be optionally allowed

There are good reasons against allowing infinite types by default (mostly, that a lot of things type check that are normally not what we want). An old haskell cafe conversation on the topic is here: http://www.nabble.com/There%27s-nothing-wrong-with-infinite-types!-td771373… However, I think infinite types should be allowed, but only with an explicit type signature. In other words, don't allow infinite types to be inferred, but if they are specified, let them pass. I think it would be very hard to shoot yourself in the foot this way. Newtype is the standard solution to situations where you really need an infinite type, but in some cases this can be a big annoyance. Using newtype sacrifices data type abstraction and very useful type classes like Functor. You can use multiparameter type classes and functional dependencies to recover some of the lost abstraction, but then type checking becomes harder to reason about and the code gets way more ugly (If you doubt, let me know, I have some examples). Allowing infinite types would fix this. I'm imagining a syntax something like this: someFunctionThatCreatesInfiniteType :: a -> b | b = [(a, b)] Thoughts? Opinions? Am I missing anything obvious? - Job

Help with Bird problem 3.3.3

I'm working my way through Bird's _Introduction to Functional Programming Using Haskell_. I'd appreciate any help with problem 3.3.3, which is: "Division of natural numbers can be specified by the condition (n * m) / n = m for all positive n and all m. Construct a program for division and prove that it meets the specification." The required construction relies on the following definitions: data Nat = Zero| Succ Nat (+) :: Nat -> Nat m + Zero = m m + Succ n = Succ (m + n) (*) :: Nat -> Nat m * Zero = Zero m * Succ n = m * n + m Proceeding as Bird does in Sec. 3.2.2, where he derives the definition of "-" from the specification "(m + n) - n = m", I've so far gotten the first case, in which m matches the pattern "Zero", simply by (i) substituting Zero for m in the specification, (ii) substituting Succ n for n in the specification (solely because n is constrained to be positive), and (iii) reducing by applying the first equation of "*": Case Zero: (Succ n * Zero) / Succ n = Zero ≡ {first equation of "*"} Zero / Succ n = Zero Easy enough, and completely intuitive, since we expect Zero divided by any non-Zero finite number to be Zero. The next case, in which m matches the pattern "Succ m", is where I get stuck, and I really have no intuition about what the definition is supposed to be. My first step is to substitute "Succ m" for "m" in the given specification, and to substitute Succ n for n in the specification (for the same reason, as above, that n is constrained to be positive), and then to use the definition of "*" to reduce the equation: Case Succ m: Succ n * Succ m / Succ n = Succ m ≡ {second equation of "*"} (Succ n * m + Succ n) / Succ n = Succ m Where do I go from here? Hi everyone, this is my first posting on here and this was what drove me here and the quest to know more as i anticipate a lot of help and direction in this quite new and different environment haskell.I have this paper that i'm working on and need to solve these scenarios/ cases based on some sample codes: Scenarios/cases: 1) Allow words to be hyphenated and treat the hyphenated word as a single word (including the hyphen). 2) As for no. 2 but if the hyphen is the last character on a line treat the hyphenated word as a single word without the hyphen. 3) Treat a capitalised word (one or more capital letters) the same as lower case, i.e. only the lower case word appears in the index. 4) Treat a word ending in an ‘s’ as a plural and thus the same as the singular, i.e. only the singular appears in the index. 5) As for no. 5 but (a) treat suffix ‘ss’ as not a plural; and (b) treat the plural suffixes ‘sses’, ‘zzes’, ‘oes’, ‘xes’, ‘shes’, ‘ches’ the same as the singular, i.e. without the ‘es’, e.g. “branches” (except for 4- and 5-letter plurals with suffices ‘oes’ and ‘ches’, e.g. “floes”, and 4-letter plural suffix ‘xes’); and (c) treat the plural suffix ‘ies’ (except for 4-letter plurals, e.g. “pies”) as the singular suffix ‘y’. 6) Make the output more readable in the form of an index table. 7) Use an output file 8) Include a user-friendly menu by which the user can choose input and output file names. Here is another prime sieve. The majority of the work done by this code is done by "merge"; the multiples of each prime percolate up through a tournament consisting of a balanced tree of suspended "merge" function calls. In order to create an infinite lazy balanced tree of lists, the datatype > data List a = A a (List a) | B [a] is used as scaffolding. One thinks of the root of the infinite tree as starting at the leftmost child, and crawling up the left spine as necessary. What I'm calling a "venturi" > venturi :: Ord a => [[a]] -> [a] merges an infinite list of infinite lists into one list, under the assumption that each list, and the heads of the lists, are in increasing order. This could be a generally useful function. If one can think of a better way to write "venturi", swapping in your code would in particular yield a faster prime sieve. I found that a tertiary merge tree was faster than a binary merge tree, because this leads to fewer suspensions. One can speed this code up a bit by interleaving strict and lazy calls, but I prefer to leave the code short and readable. It is bizarre that > trim p = let f m x = mod x m /= 0 in filter (f p) lurks in the prime sieve code, but it is only used with primes of size up to the square root of the largest output prime. I tried more thoughtful alternatives, and they all slowed down the sieve. Sometimes dumb is beautiful. Thanks to apfelmus for various helpful remarks that lead me to think of this approach. Will GHC finally support epoll in 2009?

Ticket #635 "Replace use of select() in the I/O manager with epoll/kqueue/etc." (http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/635) dates back from 2005. Now its 2009 and GHC can handle hundreds of thousands of threads, yet having more than 1024 file descriptors open is still impossible. This limitation is a real bottle neck and prevents some cool developments on server side, like scalable comet servers. Instead others (e.g. Erlang guys) post stories about how they achived 1 million comet users (cf. http://www.metabrew.com/article/a-million-user-comet-application-with-mochi… ). Hence my question - is it likely that GHC will support epoll in 2009? Cheers and happy new year! - Levi

HDBC Oracle bindings(?/!)

Are there Oracle bindings for HDBC anywhere? The HDBC project page talks about Oracle backends but there isn't an Oracle-specific driver listed (I assume one can reach an Oracle backend through the ODBC interface?). I started writing Oracle bindings for HDBC based on the Takusen code. It was done mostly for playing than for anything else and certainly isn't production ready, but it is available in a darcs repo at http://thiagoarrais.com/repos/hdbc-oracle in case anyone is interested. This code isn't ready for prime time yet and I'm looking for some that *is*. Is there such a thing already?
