Google Summer of Code - Distributed Haskell components with Apache Tuscany

Hi all, The Apache Tuscany project [1] (an implementation of OASIS SCA [2], a programming model for distributed composite applications) is participating in the Google Summer of Code program [3] and one of the GSoC student project ideas is to develop support for Haskell SCA components. The project will help assemble Haskell components with SCA components written in other programming languages, and is also a great opportunity for students to research programming models and experiment with mixing component assembly/composition and Haskell function composition. Hello Wisecrackers, Cannot resist shering with you my perspective. Computer is a logic device and logic builds complexity bottom up while graphics builds it top down. They are therefore antagonistic by nature and in the single case of their glorious interplay - The Euclidean Geometry - it blocked abstract thinking for two millennia (no zero, no negative numbers, no continuity). The implications of that facts are 3-fold: (1) Compositional GUI needs some non-geometric and perhaps non-commutative concepts (2) GUI will always set limit on the scope of your thinking (3) conceptually rich DSL is your best friend as human-computer interface. The role of GUI has gone way beyond its usefulness and now serves the industry to sell computers as candies. Apps like Acrobat Reader became little more than GUI when judged by size and only spymasters' conflicting interests strip some GUI excess to see you swim in sewers of the Internet-turned-video. This visual mania is dangerous as it discourages investigative thinking and reliance on concepts. It is shocking and in my judgement not a coincidence that major theories (like Chaos T.) were discovered using punched cards or plain pen and paper, while Artificial Intelligence research has been very acutely wounded by mouse. Down to Earth TTS reading should have human quality by now, had the researchers used conceptual and compositional approach. If linguists knew Haskell they could write DSLs to intelligently query large data sets and step by step discover human algorithms. Instead they use mostly statistics for pattern recognition. If experts could build DSLs for amplifying their own human concepts they would multiply computer power by human intelligence. Instead they are taught how to press GUI buttons. And what is behind this buttons? Statistics and designer crap! Down to the dust of your heels: make Acrobat Reader TTS read some PDF and you will hear main text intermingled with unrelated footnotes and paragraph titles and copyrights of every picture or graph repeated forever. You can correct this of course with several lines of Haskell code but then Wall Street should sell Adobe and buy You;-) I have been using Haskell for bizarre mathematical stuff but rarely feel the need for anything more than Unicode. Still I would appreciate greatly a simple compositional GUI like Clean has. Perhaps Haskell friendly drivers for selected cards is another path to simplicity? The ultimate GUI waits for operator algebra action where Haskell may show its Category Theoretical teeth. I doubt real world will ever learn Haskell so why Haskellers should pull every piece of real world crap? My advice is: stay clean, the world is wrong. Alleluia! Cheers, - Andrzej Jaworski

HXT Namespaces and XPath

Hi all, In HXT, namespace prefixes bound by an XML document are valid in the context of an XPath. How do avoid that? Correct way to record state in OpenGL?

Hi What is the correct way to record "custom" state when using OpenGL? By this, I refer to, say, properties of a square--say it's x,y coordinates as it moves across the screen. This requires that the program keep track of the object's state as it moves. These coordinates are _not_ part of the OpenGL state machine, so is the correct way to use the State monad? If so--or if not so--how would I proceed to keep track of the state of my objects as they move about the screen? Maybe the HOpenGL implementation comes with such state-tracking devices? A function that makes list of Bool lists from list of Int lists

Hey, I am new with Haskell so I think this will be a pretty dumb question. I would like to make a function that makes this: listbool :: [[Int]] -> [[Bool]] in this way: listbool [[1,2],[3,4]] == [[True, True],[False, False]] listbool [[1],[5,5],[5,4],[2]] == [[True],[False, False],[True, True], [False]] So always True from the elements of the first list, False from the elements of the second one, etc... replicateM over vectors

Hi, I'd like to be able to do replicateM, but over a vector instead of a list. Profiling

Two small questions: 1. Is Thread Scope any use for profiling single-threaded programs? 2. I tried to compile my program with -prof, but GHC just whines at me that the packages I'm using haven't been compiled for profiling. Do I really need to go recompile every single package I'm using with profiling support before I can profile my program? How do I tell Cabal to install the necessary code? (I really hope this doesn't involve uninstalling and reinstalling everything...)

I am in the damned position to have tried to develop a GUI app in Haskell. I'm building on top of gtk2hs, now we have a new compiler version a new Platform release and no gtk2hs release, so I cite from a mail from a potential user/contributor for my GUI app. What shall I say, how should he install gtk2hs? Is their a way to get a stable version from a changing darcs repo? If not all Haskellers were such GUI haters, we would have GUI libs with the platform. Jürgen " ... Each gtk2hs package (like glib-0.10.1) installed in that non-standard location by Ubuntu apt-get does at least have a package.conf file, like glib.package.conf. However, on inspection, the "id" fields are missing, and the "depends" fields look more like .cabal file "depends" fields (no ABI ID). I tried an experiment on my glib.package.conf, used "ghc --abi-hash" to generate an ID, so eventually creating a new line something like id: glib-0.10.1-d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e and then set up the "depends" properly by getting the real dependencies using "ghc-pkg -v list". After doing this then ghc-pkg register glib.package.conf worked just fine, and I see it in my global DB. It's cool that this works but it seems highly roundabout. :-) Building gtk2hs from source is broken. Not sure why - I did it OK with ghc-6.10.3. I can run ./configure no problem with ./configure --with-hcflags=-O0 --disable-split-objs --with-ghc=/usr/local/lib/ghc-6.12.1 and it claims that it will build: * The following packages will be built: * * glib : yes * gtk : yes * gio : yes * glade : yes * cairo : yes * svgcairo : yes * gtkglext : no * gconf : yes * sourceview : no * gtksourceview2 : yes * mozembed : no * soegtk : yes * gnomevfs : no * gstreamer : yes * documentation : no But "make" fails horribly...can't find any packages like "base" that configure had no problems finding, so I have no idea what the problem is there. Which is why I'd rather figure out a way to make ghc-6.12.1 recognize the gtk2hs packages that I have in that non-standard location. The procedure I described works well in theory, but apparently if the "depends" field in the "package conf" files says something like foo-2.0.1.0, it's not OK to use an existing registered "foo" that has a higher version number...I registered everything in gtk2hs manually but when building ltk it complains with Bad interface file: /usr/lib/haskell-packages/ghc6/lib/gtk-0.10.1/imports/Graphics/UI/Gtk.hi mismatched interface file versions (wanted "6121", got "") Unfortunately when using these package configuration files one has to use the ABI ID - "ghc-pkg register" won't work otherwise - so it's very finicky. I'll have to un-register all my gtk2hs packages, and start again from scratch. Anyway, back to Ubuntu, Haskell and Leksah. :-) I am removing vestiges of ghc-6.10.3 off my Ubuntu system as I encounter them, although I have no reason to believe that the presence of directories and files for that old version are causing me any harm. I am keeping ghc-6.10.4 around, in parallel with ghc-6.12.1. In any case, to the degree that I have exercised it, ghc-6.12.1 is apparently OK. I have done some "cabal install"s on a few executables and libraries, both into user and global, and things seem OK as evidenced by "ghc-pkg list". Now, to gtk2hs and ltk and Leksah. After having initial problems with building gtk2hs from source, for reasons I don't want to spend time investigating (yet), I am returning to the apt package approach, command-line this time instead of through the Synaptic GUI. Running sudo apt-get install libghc6-gtk-dev partially returns --------------- Selecting previously deselected package libghc6-glib-dev. (Reading database ... 257458 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking libghc6-glib-dev (from .../libghc6-glib-dev_0.10.1-1ubuntu2_i386.deb) ... Selecting previously deselected package libghc6-cairo-dev. Unpacking libghc6-cairo-dev (from .../libghc6-cairo-dev_0.10.1-1ubuntu2_i386.deb) ... Selecting previously deselected package libghc6-gtk-dev. Unpacking libghc6-gtk-dev (from .../libghc6-gtk-dev_0.10.1-1ubuntu2_i386.deb) ... Setting up libghc6-glib-dev (0.10.1-1ubuntu2) ... Reading package info from "/usr/lib/haskell-packages/ghc6/lib/glib-0.10.1/glib.package.conf" ... done. Writing new package config file... done. Setting up libghc6-cairo-dev (0.10.1-1ubuntu2) ... Reading package info from "/usr/lib/haskell-packages/ghc6/lib/cairo-0.10.1/cairo.package.conf" ... done. Writing new package config file... done. Setting up libghc6-gtk-dev (0.10.1-1ubuntu2) ... Reading package info from "/usr/lib/haskell-packages/ghc6/lib/gtk-0.10.1/gtk.package.conf" ... done. Writing new package config file... done. --------------- You'll see the files I was talking about, the *.package.conf files. I've attached the one for cairo, so you can also see what I was talking about: these files are real close to the *.conf files in the user and global package.conf.d databases, but they are missing the "id" field, and the "depends" field entries are like base-4.1.0.0 as opposed to a full base-3.0.3.2-52acef427378232ec569bca0486ee48f In other words, as is, "ghc-pkg register" can't use these files. Which is why I manually edited them. I still see no reason why my manual approach will not work (although figuring out how to build from source would be even better), but I'll have to keep the exact versions specified in these *.package.conf files. Much obliged for the tip about using darcs for the gtk2hs build. Worked like a charm. Combined with that, and doing occasional "cabal install"'s along the way, I have ltk and haddock-leksah-6.12 now built. I don't consider the 5 or 6 hours I spent on all this (which includes building ghc-6.12.1 from source) to be wasted; I learned a lot more about GHC package management. Bit of a snag now with leksah-server (the version in leksah-server.cabal is 0.8.0.5). I've included the console output of the build. Looking at that very first problem: /home/arved/.cabal/lib/ltk-0.8/ghc-6.12.1/libHSltk-0.8.a(Parameters.o): In function `s9Ao_info': (.text+0x28b9): undefined reference to `gtkzm0zi10zi1_GraphicsziUIziGtkziGeneralziEnums_zdfShowShadowType_closure' I can sort of parse this. I see code concerning ShadowType in ltk/Graphics.UI.Editor.Parameters.hs, and I can see that a complaint is being made about something related to ShadowType not being found (I believe) in gtk/Graphics.UI.Gtk.General.Enums. With the {-- #if MIN_VERSION_gtk(0,9,13) -- now defined in gtk #else instance Show ShadowType where show _ = "Any Shadow" #endif --} in Parameters.hs, and seeing as how gtk is 0.10.1, I would expect us to be using gtk code to provide that Show instance for ShadowType, no? Any ideas? ... "

ANN: tbox-0.1.0: Transactional variables and data structures with IO hooks

This package [1] provides STM data structures with IO hooks. The basic building blocks are instances of class TBox. Such an instance is an STM variable that might contain a value of some type a. In contrast to a plain 'TVar (Maybe a)', a TBox has IO hooks that are executed transparently on writes and reads. The IO hooks of the AdvSTM monad extend the atomicity of STM transactions to the on-commit IO actions, which makes it particularly suitable for implementing a persistent and thread-safe storage. Currently the only instance of class TBox is type TFile. A TFile serializes its content to a file using Data.Binary. New in this release is the implementation of a skip list in module Control.Concurrent.TBox.TSkipList that provides thread-safe persistency. A skip list is a probabilistic data structure that provides expected run time of O(log n) for dictionary operations (insert, lookup, filter, leq, min, delete, update) similar to a balanced tree. The main advantage of a skip list is that it does not need rebalancing, which could lead to high contention among transactions. The TFile-skip list instance tries to reconstruct the content of its elements from the TFile-directory. See module Control.Concurrent.TFile.TSkipList for a usage example. An examination of Toyota's problems will be conducted by experts from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, while the National Academy of Sciences, which advises the government, will undertake a separate, 15-month study into the use of computer technology in cars, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. Toyota has said there is no evidence that software or electronic systems are responsible for sudden acceleration in its cars. The company "repeatedly and rigorously" tests its software and has subjected it to outside review, a spokesman said. Electronics have led to some of the biggest safety breakthroughs in vehicles, such as antilock brakes and stability control. Software controls an ever-growing variety of functions in cars, including braking and accelerating. Increasingly, cars include software that links these systems to do things like parallel park the vehicle or remember the seat positions, temperatures and radio stations preferred by different drivers. "Ninety percent of all innovation in cars today is driven by software," said Ingolf Krueger, an associate professor of computer science and engineering at the University of California in San Diego. No surprise then that software is sometimes to blame when things go wrong. While Toyota has received most of the attention, other car makers have had software-related incidents. Ford Motor Co.'s 2010 Fusion Hybrid has a high-tech braking system that also recharges its battery through a process called regenerative braking. Software monitors sensors in the car and determines when to engage the conventional braking system instead. Several drivers filed complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the agency responsible for vehicle safety, stating that they depressed the brake pedal as far as possible but the brakes didn't engage. A Ford spokesman said a sensor on the car was set too sensitively and that software interpreted the signal to mean it should skip the regenerative braking step. The company issued a software upgrade that it said would take care of the issue, avoiding a recall. In November 2008, General Motors Co. recalled 12,662 of its 2009 model year Cadillac CTS sedans because a software glitch caused the passenger-side air bag to be turned off when it should have been active. That same year, Volkswagen AG recalled 4,079 2008 Passats because of software that didn't properly control the engine idle while the air conditioning was on. And Toyota in February recalled 2010 Priuses to fix the software in their antilock brakes that some owners said led to delays in the brakes engaging. To date, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has evaluated software and electronic systems only as part of other reviews, such as whether an air bag deploys when it is supposed to, a spokeswoman said. The agency doesn't have any software or electronics specialists on staff, she added. Auto software has some distinct characteristics. For one thing, the programs are relatively simple and are designed to be embedded in simple components—typically eight-bit and 16-bit computer chips, compared with more advanced 32-bit and 64-bit microprocessors found in most personal computers. The simplicity is intended to make the software more reliable—the fewer things it is asked to do, the less likely it is to experience a problem. Indeed, Mr. Krueger said automotive software has led to some of the biggest jumps in safety and fuel efficiency. Electronic stability-control systems, which detect when a car is skidding and automatically deploy the brakes, have reduced the number of vehicles that flip over, he said. In an effort to improve the quality of software in vehicles several car makers in 2003 founded the Automotive Open System Architecture group to create standards. These systems have become enormously complex, said Simon Fuerst, a spokesman for the group, all the more so because car makers traditionally use their own proprietary software formats. Raj Rajkumar, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, has recently been studying the software in a Lexus IS250, a car made by Toyota, that experienced sudden acceleration. His hypothesis is that a software glitch caused the vehicle's fail-safe mode—which typically shuts off or reduces engine power in the event of a system failure—to not to kick in when it should. But he said he isn't certain and his study is made more difficult by the fact he doesn't have access to the software code used in the car. Mr. LaHood on Tuesday said that many members of Congress feel "there's something wrong with the electronics, not only just in Toyotas but in other automobiles, too. OT: the format checker for ICFP 2010 papers, help!

This is off-topic, apologies in advance, but I hope people here have experience with this. I submitted a paper for ICFP but the paper checker says: “Margins too small: text block bigger than maximum 7in x 9in on pages 1–6 by 4–5% in at least one dimension”. Now, I've used the standard class file and template, didn't alter any of the margins/columns spacing, my paper size is set to letter, and pdflatex doesn't give me any overfull hboxes. Does anyone know why the error happens in this case? Also, if the format checker is available somewhere for download so that I can pre-check my paper, that'd be great. thanks, iustin

I have contacted the mailing list owner and am posting here instead.] Hello there fellow Haskellers, I'm developing a library called 'fastirc' for fast and convenient Internet Relay Chat (IRC) software development. It uses attoparsec and ByteStrings and the latest release also includes a client framework, which you can use to write bots and user agents easily. Here is the Hackage page: http://hackage.haskell.org/package/fastirc Even though I marked the library as 'alpha' quality, it seems to work well currently. Feel free to try it out and if you find anything odd, just drop me a message (or a patch). =) If you would like to contribute, please contact me first, so I can tell you whether your ideas would be incorporated into the 'fastirc' package or whether it would be better to fork off a new project. By the way, please note that although unlikely right now the interface might change slightly from release to release. I'm planning to stabilize it by version 0.4.0. Also note that the library uses monadLib instead of mtl/transformers, where the monad transformer interface is slightly different. Particularly inside the 'Bot' monad you can run IO computations using 'inBase' instead of 'liftIO'. For more differences, just read the monadLib docs. I hope it will be useful. These days we hear a lot about technologies to allow servers to push data, such as Comet, Ajax Push, Reverse Ajax, Two-way-web, HTTP Streaming, and HTTP server push among others. HTML 5 includes something called 'Web Sockets'. In short, it seems that the 'stateless' web model is a complete failure. People want sockets! Furthermore, the big sites of the day are 'social media' sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Four Square, etc. Well, it's clear to me where the industry is headed, and I think this is a great chance for Haskell to be the leader. persistent connection + social web site == BBS That's right! Hello, I'm writing a library for dealing with binders and I want to benchmark it against DeBruijn, Locally Nameless, HOAS, etc. One on my benchmark consists in 1. generating a big term \x.t 2. substituting u fox in t The part I want to benchmark is 2. In particular I would like that: a. \x.t is already evaluated when I run 2 (I don't want to measure the performances of the generator) b. the action of substituting u for x in t were measured as if I had to fully evaluate the result (by printing the resulting term for instance). After looking at what was available on hackage, i set my mind on strictbench, which basically calls (rnf x `seq` print "") and then uses benchpress to measure the pure computation x. Since I wanted (a), my strategy was (schematically): let t = genterm rnf t `seq` print "" bench (subst u t) I got numbers I didn't expect so I ran the following program: let t = genterm print t bench (subst u t) and then I got other numbers! Which were closer to what I think they should be, so I may be happy with them, but all of this seems to indicate that rnf doesn't behave as intended. Then I did something different: I wrote two programs. One that prints the result of (subst u t): let t = genterm let x = (subst u t) print x bench (print x) recorded the numbers of that one and then ran the program: let t = genterm bench (print (subst u t)) got the numbers, and substracted the first ones to them. By doing so, I'm sure that I get realistic numbers at least: since I print the whole resulting term, I've got a visual "proof" that it's been evaluated. But this is not very satisfactory. Does anyone have an idea why calling rnf before the bench doesn't seem to "cache" the result as calling show does? (my instances of NFData follow the scheme described in strictbench documentation). If not, do you think that measuring (computation + pretty printing time - pretty printing time) is ok? Regards, Paul

The package also provides modules for dealing with floating numbers correctly. -------------------------------------------- -- Changes since 0.12.0.1 -------------------------------------------- * Fixed a number of bugs where LogFloat values would become NaN when they should not. These bugs involved using normal-space positive infinity and so would not affect clients using the package for probabilities. The fixes do introduce some extra checks though. If anyone is using the package for probabilities in a large enough project and could run some benchmarks to see how 0.12.1 compares to 0.12.0.1 I'd love to hear the results. (I'm not sure that doing microbenchmarks would actually give much insight about real programs.) Hi, Nobody seems to have any idea what is happening yet. Though thanks for trying dagit (forgot to add haskell-cafe to my repliess to him). Quick update incase it helps, compiling with profiling and running with the -xc option results in, <Main.CAF:runInputT_rOA><System.Posix.Files.CAF>Segmentation fault I'm still working on it but could it be the configuration file? thats the thing the haskeline accesses files for right? The only time I can think of needing this is if you're running an iteratee on a file handle, keeping the handle open, then running another iteratee on it. Is this what you're doing? If I'm completely wrong about what you're trying to do (or you're using multiple threads), there are other options. You also may want to look at iteratee-HEAD. The implementation has been cleaned up a lot, the block sizes are user-specified, and there's an exception-based, user-extensible mechanism for iteratees to alter enumerator behavior. I'm looking at iteratee as a way to replace my erroneous and really inefficient lazy-IO-based backend for an expect like Monad DSL I've been working for about 6 months or so now on and off. The problem is I want something like: expect "some String" send "some response" to block or perhaps timeout, depending on the environment, looking for "some String" on an input Handle, and it appears that iteratee works in a very fixed block size. While a fixed block size is ok, if I can put back unused bytes into the enumerator somehow (I may need to put a LOT back in some cases, but in the common case I will not need to put any back as most expect-like scripts typically catch the last few bytes of data sent before the peer is blocked waiting for a response...) Otherwise, I'm going to want to roll my own iteratee style library where I have to say "NotDone howMuchMoreIThinkINeed" so I don't over consume the input stream. Does that even make any sense? I'm kind of brainstorming in this email unfortunately :-) Dave

building "encoding" on Windows?

I'm trying to help a non-Haskell person build wyvern (shameless plug in case you like go: http://dmwit.com/wyvern) but (s)he's having trouble building the "encoding" library. Has any Windows person done it successfully or is willing to try it? I tried contacting the "encoding" maintainer a few days ago, but haven't heard back. Thanks! ~d P.S. I'd like it if there were a "Data.Graph" in the base libraries with basic graph-theoretic operations. Is this something that's been discussed? For now, it appears that Graphalyze on Hackage is the most complete library for graph analysis; is that right? (I actually usually just want a pretty small subset of its functionality.) Thanks, Lee

For new users the platform makes it trivial to get up and running with a full Haskell development environment. For experienced developers, the platform provides a comprehensive, standard base for commercial and open source Haskell development that maximises interoperability and stability of your code. The 2010.1.0.0 release is a beta release for the GHC 6.12 series of compilers. It currently doesn't provide a Windows installer (which defaults to GHC 6.10.4 for now). Shootout update

The shootout (sorry, Computer Language Benchmarks Game) recently updated to GHC 6.12.1, and many of the results got worse. Isaac Gouy has added the +RTS -qg flag to partially fix it, but that turns off the parallel GC completely and we know that in most cases better results can be had by leaving it on. We really need to tune the flags for these benchmarks properly. http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/u64q/haskell.php It may be that we have to back off to +RTS -N3 in some cases to avoid the last-core problem (http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/ticket/3553) at least until 6.12.2. Benchmarking and Garbage Collection

Hi, I'm looking at benchmarking several different concurrency libraries against each other. The benchmarks involve things like repeatedly sending values between two threads. I'm likely to use Criterion for the task. However, one thing I've found is that the libraries have noticeably different behaviour in terms of the amount of garbage created. Criterion has an option to perform GC between each benchmark, but I think that the benchmark is only fair if it takes into account the GC time for each system; it doesn't seem right for two systems to be counted as equal if the times to get the results are the same, but then one has to spend twice as long as the other in GC afterwards. Here's some options I've considered: * I could make a small change to Criterion to include the time for performing GC in each benchmark run, but I worry that running the GC so often is also misrepresentative (might 100 small GCs take a lot longer than one large GC of the same data?) -- it may also add a lot of overhead to quick benchmarks, but I can avoid that problem. * Alternatively, I could run the GC once at the end of all the runs, then apportion the cost equally to each of the benchmark times (so if 100 benchmarks require 0.7s of GC, add 0.007s to each time) -- but if GC is triggered somewhere in the middle of the runs, that upsets the strategy a little. * I guess a further alternative is to make each benchmark a whole program (and decently long), then just time the whole thing, rather than using Criterion. Has anyone run into these issues before, and can anyone offer an opinion on what the best option is? Thanks, Neil.

Numeric.LinearProgramming - confusion in constructors for bounds

Hi everyone and Alberto, Numeric.LinearProgramming[1] provides a very nice interface for solving LP optimisation problems, and the well-known simplex algorithm itself. I must say I quite liked the interface it provides, simple yet sufficient. But, to my understanding, there is a confusion in the constructor name (symbols actually) for constraints. In LP, one needs to write constraints in the form of ==, <=, or >= only. You *cannot *write a constraint using strict inequalities. The algorithm has nothing wrong, but I guess it would be better to have constructor symbols right. See [2] If this is a design choice, I think it should explicitly be stated. In fact, the situation is perhaps somewhat similar to C++ where by providing exactly that the STL has been able to replace OO-style collection libraries which never really worked all that well. Agreed. There should be a hierarchy with multiple interfaces, e.g. Collection, List, Map, Set, etc. I can't speak for Edison, but ListLike only implements the List, and doesn't provide an appropriate base class. I also agree that the STL (as well as the generic collections in C#/ASP.Net) seem to take the best approach here. That being said, I also agree with Darryn Reid that Data.HashTable could use some work as a higher priority. John

my gsoc project topic

Hi! I'm wondering about the topic of my gsoc project. I'm interested in these areas: - improving cabal (more sophisticated dependency, multi version, compiler support, etc) This could be useful from practical view. - Another idea is to improve GHC's new LLVM backend. (eg: support cross module optimization, integrate with llvm-gcc or clang to support full project link time optimization, even using FFI) I'm really keen on compiler technology, and i know llvm for 3 years. (and i'm familiar with clang too) I also have a perspective to GHC's compile stages and intermediate languages. But I've seen that other people are interested in LLVM backend gsoc project too. - Another LLVM related idea is to create a framework to support writing llvm passes in haskell, this should be based on existing llvm haskell binding. - I'm also interested in computer graphics. While this kind of project could look really good, the community could not benefit from it. eg: *write a pure FRP based 3D game, withs existing haskell libs *improve lambdacube 3D engine, etc IMO the big thing will come in these area when DPH and GPGPU will be stable and supported. ANN: data-category, restricted categories

Hi everybody, At ZuriHac I released data-category. It is an implementation of several category-theoretical constructions. I started this library to learn about both category theory and type level programming, so I wanted to implement the CT concepts as directly as possible. This in contrast to the excellent category-extras library, which (I think) also tries to be as useful as possible. CT is about studying categories, so for data-category I wanted to implement all kinds of categories. The Control.Category module unfortunately requires you to implement id :: cat a a (for all a), which means it only supports categories that have exactly the same objects as Hask. So Data.Category contains an implementation of restricted categories, using inspiration from Oleg's restricted monads. It is well known that the Functor class also is a bit limited, as it only supports endofunctors in Hask. But there's another problem, if you want to define the identity functor, or the composition of 2 functors, then you have to use newtype wrappers, which can get in the way. Data.Category has an implementation of functors which solves this by using type families. Functors are represented by labels, and the type family F turns the label into the actual functor. F.e. type instance F List a = [a], type instance F Id a = a. The current version contains: - categories - Void, Unit, Pair (discrete categories with 0, 1 and 2 objects respectively) - Boolean - Omega, the natural numbers as an ordered set (ω) - Monoid - Functor, the category of functors from one category to another - Hask - Kleisli - Alg, the category of F-Algebras - functors - the identity functor - functor composition - the constant functor - the co- and contravariant Hom-functors - the diagonal functor - natural transformations - universal arrows - limits and colimits (as universal arrows from/to the diagonal functor) - using Void as index category this gives initial and terminal objects - f.e. in Alg the arrows from the initial object are catamorphisms - using Pair as index category this gives products and coproducts - f.e. in Omega they are the minimum and maximum and in Boolean and and or. - adjunctions Of course the are still a lot of things missing, especially in the details. And I'm a category theory beginner, so there will probably be some mistakes in there as well. F.e. Edward Kmett doesn't like () being the terminal object in Hask, which I thought I understood, but after thinking about it a bit more I don't. More Language.C work for Google's Summer of Code

Hello, I'm wondering whether there's anyone on the list with an interest in doing additional work on the Language.C library for the Summer of Code. There are a few enhancements that I'd be very interested seeing, and I'd love be a mentor for such a project if there's a student interested in working on them. The first is to integrate preprocessing into the library. Currently, the library calls out to GCC to preprocess source files before parsing them. This has some unfortunate consequences, however, because comments and macro information are lost. A number of program analyses could benefit from metadata encoded in comments, because C doesn't have any sort of formal annotation mechanism, but in the current state we have to resort to ugly hacks (at best) to get at the contents of comments. Also, effective diagnostic messages need to be closely tied to original source code. In the presence of pre-processed macros, column number information is unreliable, so it can be difficult to describe to a user exactly what portion of a program a particular analysis refers to. An integrated preprocessor could retain comments and remember information about macros, eliminating both of these problems. The second possible project is to create a nicer interface for traversals over Language.C ASTs. Currently, the symbol table is built to include only information about global declarations and those other declarations currently in scope. Therefore, when performing multiple traversals over an AST, each traversal must re-analyze all global declarations and the entire AST of the function of interest. A better solution might be to build a traversal that creates a single symbol table describing all declarations in a translation unit (including function- and block-scoped variables), for easy reference during further traversals. It may also be valuable to have this traversal produce a slightly-simplified AST in the process. I'm not thinking of anything as radical as the simplifications performed by something like CIL, however. It might simply be enough to transform variable references into a form suitable for easy lookup in a complete symbol table like I've just described. Other simple transformations such as making all implicit casts explicit, or normalizing compound initializers, could also be good. A third possibility, which would probably depend on the integrated preprocessor, would be to create an exact pretty-printer. That is, a pretty-printing function such that pretty . parse is the identity. Currently, parse . pretty should be the identity, but it's not true the other way around. An exact pretty-printer would be very useful in creating rich presentations of C source code --- think LXR on steroids. If you're interested in any combination of these, or anything similar, let me know. How to use unsafePerformIO properly (safely?)

I use the dreaded unsafePerformIO for a few functions in my graphviz library ( http://hackage.haskell.org/packages/archive/graphviz/2999.8.0.0/doc/html/sr… ). However, a few months ago someone informed me that the documentation for unsafePerformIO had some steps that should be followed whenever it's used: http://www.haskell.org/ghc/docs/latest/html/libraries/base-4.2.0.0/System-I… . Looking through this documentation, I'm unsure on how to deal with the last two bullet points (adding NOINLINE pragmas is easy). I've finally released my priority queue package, "pqueue," on Hackage. This is the direct result of my efforts to design a priority queue for containers, but instead, I decided to put together this package and submit it for addition to the Haskell Platform. There's already been a huge discussion about which data structure to use, but I'm definitely sticking with this structure for this major version release. I'm not entirely sure of the process to submit to HP, so if there's something in particular I should do, tell me plz. GSOC Idea: Simple audio interface

I would like to write an audio interface for haskell for GSoC. The idea is to have a simple frontend (possibly an analog to the IO 'interact' function) that would permit writing simple functions to process audio. The interface would permit easy usage of various audio APIs on various platforms to permit the writing of portable audio programs in Haskell. Initial ideas include interfaces to PortAudio, Jack, ALSA, CoreAudio, and/or SDL. The goal is to lower the barrier to writing audio functions in Haskell and to permit quick experimentation with audio generating or processing functions. I'd love to hear feedback on this idea and to know of anyone would be interested in mentoring.
