But http://hackage.haskell.org/platform/new/contents.html tells me cabal-install is supposed to ship with the platform...

It should; there's an installation script that's *supposed* to put a symlink into /usr/local/bin/cabal from /Library/Frameworks/HaskellPlatform.framework/bin/. Binaries should be there regardless. G -- Gregory Collins <greg@gregorycollins.net>
